The Thieves Guild
00:00:04
by Jake Kerr
00:00:07
(dramatic music) . Episode 15:
00:00:12
Anger in the Tower.
00:00:24
Karch could not believe what he was hearing. "He escaped?
00:00:28
It is a basement with one exit, and we had that blocked.
00:00:31
How could he possibly have escaped?"
00:00:33
The sergeant of the Merchant Tower guards cleared his throat.
00:00:36
"It appears that he somehow discovered a room which had previously been used as a bathroom.
00:00:41
He escaped into the sewers." "Did you follow him?" Karch knew the answer from the
00:00:46
look on the sergeant's face. "No. Don't answer that. I don't want to know.
00:00:51
It will only make me want to imprison more people.
00:00:54
Even if you did, you clearly didn't find him." Karch stood up from his desk
00:00:59
and started to pace. "We have guards at all the known sewer exits north of the fork."
00:01:04
Karch stopped walking and turned around.
00:01:06
"All of them?"
00:01:08
The sergeant fidgeted in his chair, which he tried to turn to face Karch.
00:01:13
"Well, no sir. There are hundreds of them, but the major public ones are under guard."
00:01:18
Not believing what he was hearing, Karch shook his head.
00:01:21
"Look, you fool. He is lost to us now. We need to assume that he is
00:01:26
going to flee to safety, most likely into the Wretched Quarter, but we can't discount him trying to cross
00:01:31
Trader's Bridge into the Upper Triangle.
00:01:34
I'll have Saxe post knights at the Great Bridge and Trader's Bridge, but you need to have all your
00:01:39
men searching the city. As long as the bridges are secure, he is trapped in the city."
00:01:44
Karch strode over to the sergeant and leaned into his face.
00:01:48
"I do not want him to escape."
00:01:52
A dark cell.
00:01:54
By the time they reached the Knight Tower, Rafe could at least get his arm above his head
00:01:59
without wincing.
00:02:01
All told, he felt in pretty good shape.
00:02:04
Despite being knocked unconscious, kicked in the leg, and being dragged downstairs, he
00:02:09
didn't have any cuts and nothing felt broken.
00:02:12
The two knights didn't speak to Rafe again, which was fine by him.
00:02:16
They answered questions with monosyllabic answers and told everyone who questioned them
00:02:21
that it was Guildmaster Saxe's orders.
00:02:24
No one objected after they said those words.
00:02:28
Rafe had never been in the Knight Tower, and it was not what he expected.
00:02:32
As the stronghold that guarded the massive front gates of the city and acted as the
00:02:37
base of the wall that protected it, he had expected rough-hewn rock and
00:02:41
solidly built stone, perhaps chipped from the glancing blows of swords and
00:02:46
spears. But what he saw was not unlike a spare version of the
00:02:51
Merchant Tower. The floor and walls were marble, and the tower itself
00:02:56
was spacious. It wasn't nearly as tall as the Merchant Tower, but it was broader.
00:03:02
As they led him down stairs that were similar to those in the Merchant Tower, Rafe found the
00:03:07
lack of decoration disconcerting.
00:03:10
There were no rugs or tapestries. It was cold, bare marble,
00:03:15
and that was somehow worse than if it was rough stone with arrow slits and wooden doors
00:03:20
with unknown dangers lurking behind them.
00:03:24
The two stopped at an iron door with a large knight standing in front of it.
00:03:28
"The guildmaster wants this one tucked away in the catacombs," Sam said, nodding
00:03:33
his head toward Rafe. The tall knight nodded and replied, "First cell on the left."
00:03:39
He then reached into his robe, pulled out a single key, turned, and
00:03:43
unlocked the door.
00:03:45
He pushed it open and then backed away.
00:03:49
Jace and Sam led Rafe through the door.
00:03:51
There was a short landing and then steps leading straight down ahead.
00:03:55
This part of the tower was of rough-hewn stone and the lighting was dim.
00:04:00
There were fewer torches spaced further apart.
00:04:03
When they reached the bottom of the steps, Rafe faced a long hallway with a dirt
00:04:08
floor and walls of stone that were placed for efficacy and not decoration.
00:04:14
As far as he could see ahead, there were cells on each side.
00:04:18
The first one on the left was open. Sam pushed him forward and Rafe
00:04:23
stumbled in. The knight then shut the door and turned a key that
00:04:28
must have been left in the lock.
00:04:30
He tossed it in the air and then caught it. He smiled and waved.
00:04:35
"Congratulations, brown-cloak, you no longer exist."
00:04:39
Jace laughed, and the two turned and walked back up the steps, their shuffling
00:04:44
footsteps the only sound Rafe could hear.
00:04:48
Rafe was amazed at how loud even soft sounds were in the catacombs.
00:04:53
The drip of water, the rub of his boot against the dirt as he adjusted his position,
00:04:58
the sputter of torches, each sound became louder and louder as each
00:05:03
minute passed. What he didn't hear was breathing, voices, or even the
00:05:08
rustle of clothing. A guard came down to change the torches, and his quiet
00:05:13
shuffling sounded almost painfully loud.
00:05:16
Eventually, Rafe fell asleep on the stone floor, his hand acting as his
00:05:21
pillow.
00:05:23
A sharp clang woke him up.
00:05:25
There was the sound of voices in the distance, and then a large group of knights
00:05:30
walked past his cell, dragging a tall man in chain mail.
00:05:34
It was hard to get a good look in the dim light, but he appeared to be one of their own.
00:05:39
After the silence, the harsh noise made Rafe cover his ears.
00:05:43
A voice echoed down the hall. "No, not that one.
00:05:47
The hall." There were some murmurs followed by a door opening
00:05:52
(door opening) , a thud, and the door closing (door closing) .
00:05:58
The knights strode past his cell without looking at him.
00:06:02
Rafe wasn't sure how long he had slept, but he assumed he had rested for
00:06:06
hours. While awake, he spent the time examining his cell, which was
00:06:11
littered with rat droppings, rotting straw, and bones of small
00:06:15
animals.
00:06:17
It wasn't long before he heard the click of a key and the clang and screech of the door opening.
00:06:22
The footsteps of what sounded like an army descended the stairs, but it was only
00:06:26
Guildmaster Sax and his deputy, John.
00:06:30
They stopped outside his cell and looked at him.
00:06:33
Rafe sat on the floor not moving. Sax walked up to the cell and banged on the
00:06:38
iron bars with his gloved fist. (banging) "Come
00:06:43
here."
00:06:44
Rafe remembered the threats made by Sam and stood up and walked over to face
00:06:49
Sax. He stood tall and stared into his eyes.
00:06:53
Expecting a beating, Rafe decided to play his only card.
00:06:57
You have no authority over me. I'm a member of the Thieves Guild and demand transfer to them.
00:07:02
My guildmaster will assign my punishment.
00:07:04
Sax's face froze in what appeared to be shock.
00:07:08
He then shook his head and smiled.
00:07:10
My, my, my, a prisoner that provides me with answers before I even ask a question.
00:07:14
What a pleasant surprise.
00:07:16
His smile disappeared.
00:07:19
But before you provide me with more answers, let me squash this silly hope of yours.
00:07:23
He waved his hand toward the long hallway.
00:07:26
My knights arrest thieves.
00:07:30
I punish thieves.
00:07:32
He leaned forward, the sour smell of wine accompanying his words.
00:07:36
I
00:07:37
execute thieves.
00:07:39
Rafe held his ground and said nothing. The guildmaster knight continued.
00:07:43
You will now tell me of Raylan's plans.
00:07:46
Last night was not an accident.
00:07:48
He crossed his arms and stared at him.
00:07:51
Rafe had no idea what Sax was talking about, but he had no plans on
00:07:56
replying even if he did.
00:07:57
Don't be foolish. I know you're a friend of Raylan's.
00:08:01
You know his plans, and I want to hear them.
00:08:03
Is he just following orders from Allard?
00:08:07
Do they plan to bring chaos to the city?
00:08:09
He waved a fist.
00:08:11
Speak.
00:08:12
The gauntleted fist reminded Rafe of Raylan's head hitting the table as he took
00:08:17
the punishment for Rafe's crime. He thought of them playing sticks and
00:08:21
rocks in the harvest fields when they were children.
00:08:25
So much had changed, but Raylan was still, first and foremost, his friend.
00:08:30
He held his tongue. With a frown, Sax moved aside and waved his deputy forward.
00:08:36
Unlock the cell.
00:08:38
Rafe had expected the comment, and it filled him with dread.
00:08:42
The beating was about to commence.
00:08:45
After unlocking the door, the deputy stepped aside, and Sax wrenched the door
00:08:50
open.
00:08:52
He strode forward and leaned down, his face inches from Rafe's.
00:08:57
Not quite so impudent now, are you?
00:08:59
His breath made Rafe's eyes burn. Without warning, he grabbed
00:09:04
Rafe's arms in his hands and yelled in his face.
00:09:07
What are Raylan's plans? Is this Allard's doing?
00:09:10
He shook Rafe, but Rafe remained silent.
00:09:13
Tell me.
00:09:15
He shoved Rafe, who flew backward, falling to the ground.
00:09:19
As Rafe regained his balance and looked up, the deputy was locking the door.
00:09:24
Sax was behind him outside the cell. He turned to face Rafe, his face
00:09:29
red but calm.
00:09:30
I have other problems to deal with right now, but I will return.
00:09:34
Until then, the rats will perhaps loosen your tongue,
00:09:37
and if not, well, there are other ways to teach obedience.
00:09:41
He turned, his robe flowing out behind him, and walked up the
00:09:45
steps.
00:09:47
The last thing Rafe heard was the scraping of the key in the iron door at the top of the stairs,
00:09:52
and then there was nothing but silence.
00:09:57
