Episode 54:

00:00:15
Books and Signs.

00:00:24
Allard leaned forward and looked closely at the ring that was on the frontispiece of

00:00:29
the Book of Guild Items and Icons. Rafe was sitting across from him,

00:00:34
and could see every detail of Allard's scarred and smooth head.

00:00:38
Everyone could see the large, wicked scar that extended from the top of his

00:00:43
head to his eyebrow. But up close, Rafe could see dozens of

00:00:48
small healed nicks and cuts. The corresponding scars

00:00:53
practically covered Allard's whole head. The implication was unsettling to Rafe.

00:00:58
Allard had been in many fights or had been beaten badly in his past, probably

00:01:03
both.

00:01:04
He was a violent man.

00:01:07
Rafe turned awkwardly away as Allard looked up, but he was certain Allard had caught

00:01:12
Rafe staring at him. "This is interesting." Allard's finger was

00:01:17
pointing at the ring. "How so?"

00:01:20
Rafe leaned down, taking a closer look, just as Allard had.

00:01:23
He could see nothing interesting about it.

00:01:26
It was a rather plain ring with a red stone.

00:01:29
There was a simple design of three circles intersecting along the band on each

00:01:34
side of the stone, but it was otherwise just a ring.

00:01:37
"This is the Thieves Guild seal." "It is?"

00:01:42
Rafe took another look. "But how can it be a seal? There is no seal.

00:01:46
It is just a plain stone." "It is a good question.

00:01:49
I asked Guild Master Pietro that same one, and he replied by telling me that the seal was featureless and

00:01:54
indistinguishable from that which is plain, just as our guild is." "Ah, as a

00:01:59
symbol. That makes sense to me." "But that's not what I find interesting.

00:02:03
The stone in our guild seal is black. This illustration shows the stone as red."

00:02:08
"Then this isn't the guild seal. Do you have the ring that we can use to compare?"

00:02:12
"Uh, I gave it to Raylan. The seal is used to identify the guild master."

00:02:18
Allard reached down to turn a page. "Perhaps there is more information on other pages."

00:02:24
Rafe grabbed Allard's hand, stopping him from touching the book.

00:02:28
Allard paused his movement, but looked at Rafe.

00:02:31
The look was one of curiosity, not anger. "It's an old book, Deputy Allard.

00:02:36
One must be gentle with the pages."

00:02:39
Allard nodded as he withdrew his hand.

00:02:42
Gently turning pages, Rafe looked for the ring.

00:02:45
There was a section on architecture unique to each guild, printed designs,

00:02:50
armor, weapons, clothing, and more.

00:02:53
Rafe turned the pages as quickly as he could, not paying much attention to the content.

00:02:58
He would go back and read the book closely later.

00:03:00
"Ah, here we are."

00:03:03
Allard leaned forward. "What does that say?"

00:03:07
It was a chapter heading with a collection of badges, pins, and rings sketched beneath.

00:03:12
"Guild master icons."

00:03:14
Nodding, Allard said, "Yes, there are seals for each guild, but also rank badges and

00:03:19
similar things that have been created for various ceremonies through the years."

00:03:23
Rafe turned the page, and the first section was of various thrones that were unique to

00:03:28
each guild master. He continued turning pages. "Here we go.

00:03:33
Guild seals." "Yes, that ring is the one Sax wears." Sax was the guild

00:03:38
master knight. There were seals for guilds that no longer existed or were

00:03:42
absorbed by other guilds, the Mining Guild, the Livestock Guild, even

00:03:47
something called the State Guild. "Here it is, but I'm afraid that isn't the

00:03:52
Thieves Guild seal," Rafe said, pointing to an illustration on the page with a label written in

00:03:57
a beautiful swirling style. "This is the seal of the Magic Guild."

00:04:01
"What foolishness is this?" Allard said, leaning back and looking up at

00:04:06
Rafe. For the first time, his face showed a tinge of anger.

00:04:10
"I will not allow you to mock me, Rafe." "It is true."

00:04:14
Rafe ran his fingers under the words.

00:04:16
"I've seen a mention of the Magic Guild in some of the ancient history books of the city.

00:04:21
Uh, perhaps the word meant something else back then, and not what we think of as a fantastical wielder of

00:04:26
magic." "You are sure of this?" "Yes.

00:04:30
I haven't done enough research yet to know more, but the Magic Guild, whatever it was, was eliminated

00:04:34
centuries ago.

00:04:36
I have a book outlining its history, but I haven't examined it yet.

00:04:40
However, here's the interesting thing.

00:04:42
The guild's entire existence was erased from the history of Ness."

00:04:46
Rafe pushed his seat back. "Here, let me show you.

00:04:49
There are only snippets in all of the other books I've read.

00:04:52
I can only assume that whoever tried to erase knowledge of the guild couldn't find every reference."

00:04:57
"Sit, Rafe. I believe you, but this is knowledge of questionable importance right

00:05:02
now."

00:05:04
Allard looked around the library. "Your efforts here are valuable.

00:05:08
I see that now." Rafe pulled his seat forward.

00:05:10
"Are you saying that I'm to continue my research?" "Yes, it has little value

00:05:15
now, but I can see it having value in the future."

00:05:19
Allard smiled. "So I think that we should request Raylan to change your title to

00:05:24
guild historian." "I would like that," pointing back at the book.

00:05:28
"So if this is not the Thieves Guild seal, can you find it in the book?

00:05:33
And perhaps we can compare them and see if there is a reason written for why they are so similar."

00:05:39
Rafe nodded and turned the pages. After a few turns, the section on

00:05:44
guild seals ended. "It's not listed here."

00:05:48
Furrowing his brows, Rafe turned the pages back.

00:05:51
"Perhaps I missed it." "No, I, I don't believe you did.

00:05:55
Page through more sections and look for other Thieves Guild items."

00:05:59
Rafe continued turning page after page, but while all of the other guilds

00:06:04
had several items, including many that no longer existed, the Thieves Guild

00:06:09
was nowhere to be seen. "The Thieves Guild is not included in this volume,"

00:06:13
Rafe stated as he closed the book. "Does it say it is the first of multiple

00:06:18
volumes?"

00:06:20
Rafe examined the cover, the spine, and the first few interior pages.

00:06:24
"No, this is not a multi-volume series, unless they added another volume later,

00:06:29
not knowing that this one was unfinished."

00:06:32
Allard nodded. "Our guild has always been well-hidden," Allard said as he

00:06:37
pushed his chair back and rose. "Keep up your research, Rafe.

00:06:41
I'll have someone else manage tower preparations." "Thank you, Deputy Allard.

00:06:46
I will."

00:06:47
The sound of Allard's heavy boots retreating across the stone floor filled the room.

00:06:52
The sound stopped and Rafe looked up.

00:06:55
Allard stood at the entrance to the library. He had turned and was facing Rafe.

00:07:00
"And, Rafe, please keep your findings secret until the guild master returns.

00:07:04
We will discuss them then."

00:07:06
Rafe was going to reply that he would, and that he could be trusted, but

00:07:11
Allard had already turned and exited the room.
