The Thieves Guild,

00:00:04
by Jake Kerr.

00:00:08
Episode 3:

00:00:10
Caught.

00:00:27
These were the moments that brought joy to Raylan.

00:00:31
Surrounded by both friends and strangers from various guilds, he loved

00:00:36
to weave tales about his derring-do at fighting the officious Knight Guild

00:00:41
or the greedy Merchant Guild or the dull Harvest Guild.

00:00:45
In the city state of Ness, guilds ran everything, their distinct colors a mark of

00:00:51
pride worn by every guild member.

00:00:53
Not being in a guild required one to wear brown.

00:00:56
And while it was commonly a sign of immaturity and a source of disparaging comments,

00:01:01
for Raylan, it was a sign of his independence and freed him to mock all guilds

00:01:06
without the underlying tension of guild rivalry.

00:01:09
He leaned forward, spilling his ale a bit, as he prepared to describe the

00:01:14
helpless look on the knight's face as he turned after the tomato hit him

00:01:19
square in the back.

00:01:21
Of course, Raylan wasn't stupid. He had to use the right story for the

00:01:26
right crowd.

00:01:28
He glanced one more time around the large table at the back of The Four Triangles, a

00:01:33
workingman's inn where he would find a sympathetic audience.

00:01:37
Most of the boys were apprentices to his brother's guild, all wearing the merchants' deep

00:01:42
blue robes. There were a few Harvest apprentices wearing their greens, but there was

00:01:47
nary a white tunic or piece of armor in the room.

00:01:51
Raylan smiled and continued. "Uh, it was beautiful.

00:01:54
The tomato was just a bit too ripe, and it landed with a huge splat right in the middle of the

00:01:59
guard's back."

00:02:01
He slammed the flat of his hand on the table (table slams) .

00:02:05
There were laughs and clapping. He had played the crowd perfectly.

00:02:09
All apprentices chafed at the oversight of the knights and their white robes and armor.

00:02:15
He glanced at Rafe, who looked glum.

00:02:17
He had offered his friend the starring role, but as Raylan expected,

00:02:22
Rafe was horrified at the thought of his participation becoming public.

00:02:27
Raylan gave him what he hoped was a conspiratorial wink and turned back to

00:02:32
his audience. "The best part is that he was staring right at me and couldn't see me in

00:02:37
the shadows of the wall,

00:02:39
so I just winked at him and walked away."

00:02:42
There was more laughter and more complementary nods at his cleverness.

00:02:46
One boy that Raylan didn't know slapped him on the back.

00:02:50
Raylan was in the midst of a large gulp of ale when the front door opened and everyone

00:02:54
went silent. He turned to look at who arrived, and his stomach fell.

00:02:59
It was his brother's deputy, Karch. He stood in his deep blue

00:03:04
robe, his golden hair slicked back and tied behind his head.

00:03:08
He always pulled it too tight, and it made his face look taut, narrowing his eyes to

00:03:13
slits and his mouth to a thin, cruel line.

00:03:17
The merchant apprentices disappeared as Karch walked toward Raylan, a look

00:03:22
of disgust on his face and his arms behind his back.

00:03:27
Everyone else sank into their seats or slowly moved to other tables.

00:03:32
Rafe was nowhere to be seen. A few brave apprentices smiled

00:03:37
expectantly at Raylan. He had nothing to lose, so he decided to

00:03:41
show off.

00:03:43
The worst case scenario was that he'd get a dressing down from his brother and

00:03:48
Karch would give him a whipping. "I didn't know you frequented these kinds of places,

00:03:52
Karch." The deputy looked around and frowned.

00:03:56
"You are correct, Raylan. But when one is collecting garbage, you need to walk

00:04:01
among the filth."

00:04:03
He turned back to Raylan and smiled. "Which reminds me, you are to come with me."

00:04:07
"I don't need to do any such thing, Karch."

00:04:10
Raylan grabbed his brown shirt. "As you can see, I'm guildless and you have

00:04:15
no authority over me."

00:04:18
Karch smiled again and Raylan started to get nervous.

00:04:21
He was fully expecting a slap for his insolence, but that was usually preceded

00:04:26
by an angry tongue lashing. A smile didn't mean anything good.

00:04:30
"Ah, yes, the 15-year-old wearing the brown of the guildless."

00:04:35
Karch looked around the room. "I don't see anyone else in here without a guild.

00:04:40
How long do you intend on such irresponsibility, Raylan?

00:04:44
Do you know how many favors your brother has requested on your behalf only to have you spit in his

00:04:49
face at each guild?"

00:04:51
Raylan shrugged. "I never asked him for anything." Karch leaned

00:04:55
forward. "Well, the days of asking for nothing and receiving much are at an end.

00:05:00
I'm afraid you have gone too far this time."

00:05:03
Raylan leaned back while he tried to think of what he had done.

00:05:06
He couldn't think of anything that would offend his brother.

00:05:10
Karch must have been bluffing. "I have no idea what you are talking about.

00:05:14
Now, leave me alone and tell my brother that he should worry about guild matters and not me."

00:05:19
Standing up straight, Karch brought his hand forward from behind his back and tossed a white

00:05:23
pile of cloth on the table. It was a knight's robe with a reddish-brown stain on

00:05:28
it. "I'm afraid a guild matter is why I am here." Karch turned

00:05:33
toward the door and raised his voice.

00:05:35
"Guards, it is time." Three guards in white entered the inn.

00:05:41
The one in front was missing his robe.

00:05:44
Karch looked back at Raylan and smiled.

00:05:46
"I believe you know Sir Henry." Karch tapped the robe.

00:05:50
"You met yesterday."

00:05:53
The guard had a scowl on his face. Raylan recognized the eyes, but he couldn't

00:05:57
quite believe that the guard could recognize him.

00:06:00
"I don't know what you are talking about, Karch.

00:06:04
I never met that man in my life." "Your stories have become tiresome, Raylan."

00:06:09
Karch moved out of the way. "Take him to the carriage, and if he is bruised from the

00:06:14
journey, I certainly won't find fault."

00:06:17
Raylan pushed his chair back and scrambled toward the back of the room.

00:06:21
He hadn't gone two feet, however, before a thick hand grabbed him by the collar.

00:06:25
He tried to wriggle free, but the hand shoved his head into a pillar.

00:06:30
Raylan staggered backward from the blow only to have the hand turn him toward the table behind

00:06:35
him. He felt his head impact the table.

00:06:39
And everything went dark.
