Episode 38:

00:00:15
Caught.

00:00:24
Mailer knew she didn't really have an hour to get to Polo.

00:00:27
She'd spun a story of a tragedy with the guard, Richard, and if he lived close

00:00:32
by, they'd be back quickly once they discovered the falsehood.

00:00:37
Still, Mailer felt confident as she didn't have a large area to search.

00:00:41
The passage was clearly within the massive tree trunk that grew up into the ceiling, and

00:00:46
to Polo's quarters.

00:00:49
After 10 minutes of searching, however, her optimism was fading.

00:00:53
She'd examined practically every nook and cranny of the bark around the tree itself.

00:00:58
There were no levers, no buttons, no cracks, and no doors.

00:01:02
It was rough, deep brown bark.

00:01:05
She turned her attention to the front of the tree.

00:01:07
The throne looked like it was carved out of the curvature of the tree, creating a natural niche.

00:01:12
The trunk itself acted as a majestic back that climbed all the way to the

00:01:17
ceiling, while the sides acted as the walls of the wooden alcove.

00:01:22
A closer look revealed that the alcove had not actually been carved at

00:01:27
all. It grew that way. The throne had a wooden seat and

00:01:32
armrests that looked so much like a real throne that Mailer was certain

00:01:37
they, at least, were carved out of the wood.

00:01:40
But a closer look showed that they too were natural.

00:01:44
The Harvest House tree had been somehow grown to house the throne.

00:01:49
Running her fingers along the armrests and the sides of the alcove the throne sat in,

00:01:54
Mailer looked for levers or some other way to uncover steps, or even

00:01:59
lift the throne itself up through the massive trunk. But there was nothing.

00:02:05
At that point, Mailer started to reconsider whether she was actually right.

00:02:10
While the throne was embedded in the huge trunk, a quick glance up showed

00:02:15
solid wood. There was no hollowed out passage up to the second floor.

00:02:20
To make matters worse, when she rapped on the wood of the tree to the sides and back of the throne,

00:02:25
the sound indicated solid wood. Mailer tensed as she heard a shout in the

00:02:30
distance, followed by the clang of armored men moving in a hurry.

00:02:35
Despairing of a solution, Mailer sat down on the throne and pretended she was

00:02:40
Polo. "Uh, I'm looking out on my guild members while being embraced by the living

00:02:45
tree that is the heart of the guild. I spend hours on guild business.

00:02:49
My day is done, what do I do next?" Mailer looked up and saw solid wood.

00:02:54
She ran her hands along the smooth wood.

00:02:56
It was difficult to concentrate, as Mailer heard another shout, much closer, and the

00:03:01
sound of swords being unsheathed. "What I really want is to just close my

00:03:06
eyes and have the tree to take me to my quarters." She shot upright.

00:03:10
The entire house was a living thing. The throne wasn't carved, it was grown that way.

00:03:15
But maybe it wasn't pruned and shaped, maybe the tree is doing this out of its love for the

00:03:20
guild. The idea was absurd, of course.

00:03:23
A giant thinking tree that works with the guild master?

00:03:26
It seemed magical, and magic didn't exist.

00:03:29
Still, the doors burst open and a group of knights ran toward her.

00:03:33
Mailer closed her eyes and gripped the wood of the armrests.

00:03:36
"Harvest Tree, I need your help. I don't know if

00:03:41
you can see into my heart, but I am here to help the guild master.

00:03:45
But I can only do that if I can talk to him. I need to reach him.

00:03:50
He needs my help. I need your help to help him.

00:03:54
Will you help me?"

00:03:55
There was no grinding that you would expect from stone.

00:03:59
There wasn't even the creaking that you would expect from old or dried wood being

00:04:04
lifted or moved. There was only a slight whoosh sound, a sound akin

00:04:09
to leaves blowing in the wind. Mailer opened her eyes just as

00:04:13
living wood and bark sealed the gap in front of her.

00:04:17
There was a glint of shiny metal, and then

00:04:20
darkness. She was sealed inside the trunk of the tree.

00:04:25
Within moments, Mailer felt a slight pressure against her bottom and feet.

00:04:29
She couldn't see anything, but there was the perception of vertical movement, even though

00:04:34
her sense of touch revealed nothing more than her sitting on the throne with her

00:04:39
hands on the armrests.

00:04:42
A slight lurch jostled Mailer in the seat, and then a crack appeared in front

00:04:47
of her. It widened as she watched the wood pull back, once again with the

00:04:51
sound of wind blowing through leaves.

00:04:54
It almost looked as if the wood in front of her face was melting into the sides as the throne

00:04:59
alcove was revealed.

00:05:01
It didn't take more than a few seconds for Mailer to realize she was in the guild master's

00:05:06
quarters. The light was dim, and she looked out on a room that was much

00:05:11
smaller than the hall below. If possible, the quarters were even more

00:05:16
natural than the guild hall. The walls were natural wood bark,

00:05:21
while the large window that looked out on the wall in the distance didn't have

00:05:25
glass, but rather was open to the air.

00:05:29
Rising from the throne and stepping as quietly as she could in the armor, Mailer prepared

00:05:34
herself to be confronted by a guard. A glance to the left showed a single door

00:05:39
with an entryway filled with flowers and green plants.

00:05:43
Across from the throne was the large window that looked to the east and the great wall in the

00:05:48
distance.

00:05:49
To her right was a circular staircase that looked like it was woven out of

00:05:54
branches.

00:05:55
It presumably led to the roof of Harvest House.

00:05:59
To the right of the staircase was a large bed, upon which slept

00:06:04
Polo.Meila took another glance around the room, but it

00:06:08
was nothing more than a sleeping quarters, with a few pieces of furniture,

00:06:13
presumably formed from the branches of the great living tree.

00:06:18
Not wanting to scare Polo, Meila slipped off her helm and placed

00:06:23
it on the floor. She also went over to the flowers and snipped off a

00:06:27
brilliant red rose.

00:06:29
Certainly Guild Master Polo would know that a young woman bearing a flower was

00:06:34
not an assassin. With no plan other than to talk to the guild master,

00:06:39
Meila walked over and gently shoved the old man on the shoulder.

00:06:42
"Guild Master, I have a message for you," she whispered.

00:06:46
With surprising speed, Polo whipped around with a dagger in his left hand.

00:06:51
He held it between himself and Meila as he slid away from her.

00:06:55
He looked to be about to call for someone when he caught sight of the red rose in Meila's

00:07:00
left hand.

00:07:01
"I'm old and cautious, but I'm not a fool.

00:07:06
If you were an assassin, I would be dead."

00:07:08
He nodded to the rose.

00:07:09
"Nor would you wield such a weapon."

00:07:12
Guild Master-

00:07:13
"You will shut your mouth, or I will call my guards immediately.

00:07:18
You will answer my questions, and you will only speak when I permit you."

00:07:23
Meila nodded.

00:07:24
"Good. You are wise for your years." Polo slid back some more and

00:07:28
climbed out of his bed. "Sit on that chair over there." He motioned with his chin to an

00:07:33
area behind Meila. Looking back, Meila noticed a stool that was

00:07:38
near what appeared to be an empty workbench.

00:07:42
Walking over, she sat down on the stool, which was attached to the floor.

00:07:46
She placed the rose on the bench. Polo walked around his bed and sat on the

00:07:51
edge, holding the dagger toward Meila.

00:07:53
"How did you get in here?"

00:07:55
"I sat on the throne and the tree delivered me to your quarters."

00:07:58
"Impossible. The tree will only heed the commands of the guild master."

00:08:03
"I, I did not command the tree. I requested that it deliver me to you, as I have an important

00:08:07
message that will help keep you safe."

00:08:10
Polo nodded, but kept the dagger poised in his hand.

00:08:13
"What is this message that concerns my safety?"

00:08:17
Meila felt a rush of relief. She had achieved her mission.

00:08:21
"The guild master merchant has sent his deputy off to the outlanders to hire an

00:08:26
assassin to kill you. His goal has no point of failure, as if the assassin succeeds,

00:08:31
you will be out of his way. If the assassin fails, he will rally the populace against the

00:08:35
outlanders and unite the city through fear in a way that he couldn't through political

00:08:40
maneuvering."

00:08:42
Polo stared at Meila for a few seconds.

00:08:44
"That's it?"

00:08:46
Meila was confused by Polo's response.

00:08:49
"Yes. But the key part of the message is not that you should protect yourself.

00:08:54
You obviously know this. It is that when you capture the outlander, you do not make it

00:08:58
public."

00:09:00
Meila wasn't sure what kind of response her message would receive, but she did not expect the one

00:09:05
Polo gave.

00:09:06
"Do you take me for a child?"

00:09:08
"Um," she stammered. "No, sir."

00:09:11
"I was guild master before you were born.

00:09:15
Do you think I am so stupid as to allow Larsen to use an outlander to gain an

00:09:20
advantage over me?"

00:09:21
Polo sighed.

00:09:23
"In fact, the message you delivered that matters most to me is your presence.

00:09:28
You somehow got through my defenses, and how you did that is information

00:09:34
I consider valuable."

00:09:35
This was not going how Meila had planned.

00:09:39
She had hoped he would thank her for the information, and then, in gratitude, let her go.

00:09:44
In hindsight, it was an optimistic assumption, and that was nowhere more

00:09:49
evident than in Polo's current line of discussion, which centered around her as an

00:09:53
intruder, not a savior.

00:09:56
"Who are you?"

00:09:57
"I'm Lavender, a guild member from the outer fields.

00:10:01
My father has a distant relative who is an outlander, and he informed me of the plan and told me to

00:10:06
give you the message out of our loyalty to the guild."

00:10:09
Meila bowed her head.

00:10:10
"Nonsense."

00:10:12
For the first time since Meila woke him, Polo appeared angry.

00:10:16
"You did not get into my quarters being just some field worker."

00:10:21
Polo stood up, and as Meila went to stand, Polo waved his

00:10:25
dagger.

00:10:26
"Stay seated."

00:10:28
Meila sat down.

00:10:29
"I know who you are. Again, do you take me for a fool?

00:10:33
You are a guild master blade."

00:10:36
Meila had to admit that Polo was definitely not stupid.

00:10:39
"I am not, Guild Master."

00:10:42
Meila picked up the rose.

00:10:43
"Do blades bear roses?"

00:10:45
Polo laughed.

00:10:46
"I didn't say you were an enemy blade, just that you are a blade.

00:10:50
If you were Saxes or Larsen's blade, I'd be dead.

00:10:54
And Orion, I think his blade is probably a jester. No, I know who you are.

00:10:59
You are Quinto's blade."

00:11:01
"Quinto, the Guild Master ranger?"

00:11:04
As soon as Meila asked the question, she realized why Polo thought that way.

00:11:08
"Yes. The rangers live outside the wall and would know what is happening with the

00:11:13
outlanders, and Quinto hates Larsen. Hell, he hates all of the guild masters.

00:11:18
However, he loves the city, and if he felt warning me would help, I could see him

00:11:23
doing it."

00:11:24
Polo stared at Meila.

00:11:26
"He's also politically naive enough to think I would need

00:11:31
such a useless warning."

00:11:33
"I'm sorry, sir, but I'm not a blade. I'm a Harvest Guild member."

00:11:37
Polo turned and yelled out, "Guards, enter now, guards."

00:11:42
Turning back to Meila, Polo said.

00:11:44
"You should just admit it now, you are the blade of the Rangers Guild."

00:11:48
"I am not, Guild Master Polo, I assure you,"

00:11:52
Meila replied as the door swung open and two of Polo's personal guards rushed in.

00:11:57
They were in chainmail and looked nearly as intimidating as Allard.

00:12:02
Meila knew she had no chance of fighting her way out. She stood up.

00:12:07
"I am so sorry, Guild Master. I was hoping to do a kindness to the guild.

00:12:12
I apologize for not realizing you would already know this."

00:12:16
She took a step forward.

00:12:17
"Are the guards going to throw me out?

00:12:20
Are you going to expel me from the guild?"

00:12:22
Polo laughed.

00:12:23
"Goodness, no.

00:12:26
They're going to throw you in prison."
