Episode 127:

00:00:16
Let the River Run Red.

00:00:23
Rodgers had no escort and he had no men.

00:00:28
He was given new clothes, a sword from Polo's armory, and a pat on the

00:00:32
back.

00:00:34
As he made his way to Trader's Bridge, he realized he didn't even have a mission,

00:00:39
just to cross the bridge and keep our guild members in the lower quarter safe,

00:00:45
as Orion put it.

00:00:46
Making things up as he went along wasn't necessarily Rodgers' favorite way of

00:00:51
operating, but it was clear he was good at it.

00:00:55
Also, Polo had said he dispatched a guild member to the old quarter to

00:01:00
tell the guild members to stay there, and if they could,

00:01:05
arm themselves.

00:01:07
Their job was to wait and then attack across the Great Bridge when the time was

00:01:12
right.

00:01:13
That left Rodgers with a few Harvest Guild members in the lower quarter, who had

00:01:18
remained behind.

00:01:20
They were most likely the sick and elderly.

00:01:23
The challenge was that when the civil war arrived in earnest, he would need to protect them.

00:01:29
But how? In fact, how could he avoid being captured?

00:01:34
Running around in the colors of the enemy wouldn't exactly avoid the attention of the

00:01:39
knights and merchants.

00:01:41
Rodgers stopped and stretched. He was nearly to Trader's Bridge, and he figured

00:01:46
that he would come up with something during the remainder of his walk.

00:01:50
He had just started walking again when he realized that the war he was preparing

00:01:55
for had already begun. Harvest Guild members were rushing down the

00:01:59
street, away from the lower quarter.

00:02:02
Rodgers picked up his pace, and moments later, a young man just out of

00:02:07
boyhood stumbled past him, bleeding from a wound.

00:02:12
Rodgers grabbed him by the arm. He looked terrified.

00:02:15
"What has happened?"

00:02:17
The boy looked up. He was shaking. "Are you hurt?" The boy

00:02:22
noticed Rodgers' captain stripes. "Oh, thank the gods.

00:02:26
Captain, it is the knights. They swarmed Trader's Bridge and slaughtered our guards,

00:02:31
and would have killed every guild member on the bridge if we hadn't fled."

00:02:35
Rodgers glanced down the road. The bridge was too far to see, but he

00:02:40
didn't hear the clang of swords or fighting.

00:02:43
"How many, and did they enter the quarter?" "I fled, sir, but there were perhaps a

00:02:47
dozen. They just walked across the bridge, killing any of us in their path."

00:02:53
Rodgers nodded. A dozen? So their goal was to simply

00:02:58
take the bridge, not overwhelm the upper quarter with a surprise attack

00:03:02
by a large force. Rodgers looked around and saw a Harvest Guild member

00:03:07
leading a horse with a small cart down a side road.

00:03:11
"You there." The guild member turned and looked at Rodgers.

00:03:15
"Take this young man to Harvest House and report to Esma.

00:03:18
It is critical you get there as fast as possible." The guild member just stared at Rodgers,

00:03:23
slack-jawed. Rodgers unsheathed his sword and marched toward him.

00:03:28
"Do it now." The man turned his horse and cart around and headed toward

00:03:33
Rodgers. Rodgers gently squeezed the injured man's shoulder.

00:03:37
"Go directly to Deputy Guildmaster Esma and relay to him everything you've seen.

00:03:42
Tell him that Captain Rodgers is heading to the bridge to help, but that he needs to immediately send a huge

00:03:47
force to reinforce the Upper Triangle."

00:03:49
The man and cart arrived and the young man climbed into the cart.

00:03:54
It was laden with vegetables. Rodgers closed his eyes.

00:03:58
He knew that it was probably the last time he'd see a cart with vegetables in a long

00:04:03
time. From now on, they would be filled with weapons, or armed, or wounded

00:04:08
guild members.

00:04:09
Rodgers rushed down the road. He had only one fear: that the

00:04:14
knights or merchants would destroy the bridge.

00:04:17
That would be a horrific blow to the one advantage the Harvest Guild had:

00:04:22
enormous numbers. But such numbers did little good if they couldn't

00:04:27
flood into the lower quarter. Even if the rangers took the wall, there was

00:04:32
still no entry from there to the lower quarter other than the night watch and the Night

00:04:36
Guild Tower.

00:04:38
No, if Trader's Bridge was destroyed, the war would be fought

00:04:43
via boat crossings and long marches to the Great Gate through the outer

00:04:48
fields. He had to retake the bridge, and he had to do it before the knights or

00:04:52
merchants could reinforce it with more troops.

00:04:56
As he rushed down the street, he gathered a few Harvest Guards.

00:05:00
They were patrolling the streets, but immediately joined up with Rodgers as he explained

00:05:05
what was going on. By the time he was peering from an alley toward the bridge in the

00:05:10
distance, he had a mighty force of six guards.

00:05:14
Six!

00:05:15
The boy had at least estimated the night force well.

00:05:19
There were 10 of them, and they were amassed on the upper quarter side, walking along

00:05:24
with swords unsheathed, glancing into the upper quarter as if daring

00:05:28
anyone to try and assault them.

00:05:31
Rodgers turned to the oldest of the guards, a woman named Ji.

00:05:35
"We can't surprise them, and we can't take them with just our small force.

00:05:40
We need more.

00:05:41
Uh, take your fellow guards and look for more might, guild members with axes or scythes or

00:05:46
even hoes.

00:05:48
If you can find any with bows and arrows, that could be the decisive difference." "It shall be done."

00:05:53
She turned to the group. "Let's go directly to the Black neighborhood.

00:05:58
It isn't far, and they are strong and will have what we need."Rogers

00:06:03
didn't want to admit to his lack of knowledge as to what the Black neighborhood was,

00:06:08
so he pretended to go along. "Yes, that's an excellent idea." Ji

00:06:12
smiled.

00:06:13
"The miners will have pickaxes and strong arms."

00:06:17
Miners, of course, Rogers thought. They would get to the mines

00:06:22
via the river and have an enclave of families here.

00:06:25
"And I-" Ji smiled even wider. "Know a

00:06:30
family that has an expert bowman."

00:06:33
The group rushed away while Rogers kept an eye on the bridge.

00:06:37
The knights continued to march around, oozing arrogance.

00:06:40
They clearly had no intent on destroying the bridge. Was that for the next group?

00:06:46
Or was Sax and Orion so arrogant that they didn't think destroying this

00:06:51
entry to the lower quarter was necessary? He hoped it was the latter.

00:06:56
The bowman arrived first, but he wasn't the bowman Ji had mentioned.

00:07:00
"Your son is in the outer field." Rogers had just been told the marksman

00:07:05
was away, but that this old man would do as well.

00:07:09
Rogers had his doubts. The man was stooped and appeared in poor health.

00:07:13
He had long, gray hair and dark eyes, so dark that they appeared

00:07:18
black.

00:07:20
Rogers wasn't sure he could pull the string back to loose an arrow, let alone hit the

00:07:24
mark. "My grandson is in the outer fields."

00:07:29
The man deftly slid the bow off of his shoulder.

00:07:33
"But at this short distance, I can fill his place."

00:07:38
Rogers looked at the more than 100 yards between the houses and the bridge, and found

00:07:43
he couldn't trust the old man's confidence.

00:07:45
"I am Raif."

00:07:48
Rogers couldn't help but smile. The ancient bowman had the same name as

00:07:53
Raylan's loyal friend. That had to be a good sign.

00:07:57
"Can you hit a guard or two?

00:08:00
I simply need you to distract them from our attack."

00:08:03
The man laughed. "Young captain, the name Raif appears unknown

00:08:08
to you.

00:08:10
She knows."

00:08:12
Raif motioned with his shoulder to Ji. She nodded.

00:08:15
Her smile was so wide that Rogers could see nearly every one of her teeth.

00:08:20
"But rather than have her regale you with stories of

00:08:25
harvest festivals past, let me show you."

00:08:30
Rogers couldn't do any more than nod his head.

00:08:33
He wasn't quite sure what was happening, other than Ji had somehow found one of the

00:08:38
best marksmen in the upper quarter. At least, Rogers hoped that was what he was

00:08:42
hearing. "Let us go to that building.

00:08:46
I can distract them from the second floor."

00:08:50
The man chuckled as if distraction was a pretty funny description for what he intended.

00:08:55
"We will need to wait for the guards and reinforcements."

00:08:58
Raif turned, walked over, and put a gnarled hand on Rogers' shoulder.

00:09:03
His coal black eyes looked directly at Rogers.

00:09:07
"No, we won't."

00:09:10
The man let go and wandered to a building that faced Trader's Bridge.

00:09:15
It was perhaps 100 yards from the guards, who all wandered along the edge of

00:09:20
the bridge. Rogers followed close behind.

00:09:24
"There are 10 of them. Can you hit a few of them from this distance before they retreat or

00:09:28
assault us?"

00:09:30
The old man just shook his head in reply, as if the question amused

00:09:35
him. The owner of the house immediately gave them access and escorted them up to

00:09:40
his master bedroom. He appeared wealthy, as he had a large window that looked out

00:09:45
upon the bridge and the lower quarter.

00:09:47
It was a wonderful view and a perfect spot for a bowman.

00:09:52
Raif looked sad as he turned to the man.

00:09:55
"I'm sorry, young guild mate. We will need to break your window."

00:09:59
"I understand what is happening

00:10:02
and what others have lost.

00:10:05
It is the least I can do." "You are an honor to the guild."

00:10:10
Raif swung his bow and shattered the window, shards of glass falling to

00:10:15
the lawn below.

00:10:17
Without saying anything else, he pulled an arrow out of his quiver with such speed

00:10:22
that Rogers wasn't even sure how he did it.

00:10:25
"The first arrow, you pull it at random so there is no

00:10:30
insult to the others. It is an honor,

00:10:34
and its flight will inspire its brothers to fly true."

00:10:38
Rogers not only didn't know how to reply, he had no time to reply.

00:10:44
Raif crouched down slightly, nocked the arrow, and let it loose before

00:10:48
Rogers had even formulated a thought.

00:10:51
By the time he had turned to see if the arrow hit its mark, the old bowman had

00:10:56
already nocked a second arrow and let it loose. It was extraordinary.

00:11:01
By the time Rogers realized that Raif was pulling arrows from his quiver and

00:11:06
immediately shooting them in rapid fire, three guards were lying on the ground,

00:11:11
unmoving.

00:11:12
Rogers peered out. He wasn't sure, but it looked like an arrow was sticking out of the

00:11:17
eye of each guard.

00:11:19
Two more guards fell before they had even realized they were under attack.

00:11:24
There was no place to hide on the bridge.

00:11:27
There were small decorative towers at the end, but they provided scant protection.

00:11:32
In fact, a guard hid behind one as his fellow guards fled across the

00:11:37
bridge, only to fall back into the river as an arrow struck him in the neck.

00:11:43
In mere seconds, Raif, the old bowman who was presumably famous

00:11:48
within the guild, had shattered the knight defenses, killing over half the

00:11:53
defenders. Rogers looked over at the old man, who was already sliding

00:11:58
his bow onto his shoulder.

00:12:00
The old man wasn't smiling. In fact, he looked grim.

00:12:05
He stretched his fingers. "Thank you."

00:12:09
Raif turned to Rogers, his grim look turning to sorrow or relief,

00:12:14
or some other complex emotion that Rogers couldn't read.

00:12:17
"Now the hard work begins."

00:12:22
He once again put his hand on Rogers' shoulder.

00:12:25
"A piece of advice, young captain." "Yes?" "Toss the bodies

00:12:30
in the North Fork. Let the river run red as a warning to those who threaten our

00:12:35
guild."

00:12:37
Rogers would let the river run red.

00:12:40
He would let the streets run red.

00:12:43
But first, he had to secure the bridge.

00:12:46
And as he looked at the road that led up and down the North Fork, he had just the idea

00:12:51
on how to do it.
