Episode 20.
00:00:13
Not getting caught.
00:00:24
Raelan knew that his biggest strategic asset was his biggest tactical
00:00:28
weakness, his yellow tunic. It would make him a clear target for every knight in the
00:00:33
tower. It would distract them all from his friend's escape, but it also made him stand
00:00:38
out in the sea of white, making him much easier to catch.
00:00:42
He didn't think much about it until he made it through the front gate of the tower.
00:00:47
Getting there wasn't very difficult.
00:00:49
The knights all wore their armor, whether it was the thick ornamental armor
00:00:54
or the chain mail of the working knights.
00:00:57
Raelan found it easy to sprint past one knight while dodging another.
00:01:02
In fact, his entire life had consisted of him running through crowds and
00:01:07
avoiding outstretched hands.
00:01:10
One of the things Raelan had mastered was using the momentum of one pursuer
00:01:15
against a different pursuer. This was made much easier by the bulk of the knights.
00:01:19
He would pull a knight off his feet, only to have other knights trip over their fallen
00:01:24
friend. The most difficult trial was getting past a string of knights at the front
00:01:29
gate, who stood with their swords unsheathed.
00:01:33
But Raelan had been through a similar gauntlet during several escapes.
00:01:37
Of course, he'd been caught more than a few times facing them,
00:01:42
but the difference between success and failure always came down to one
00:01:47
thing, the floor.
00:01:49
Raelan ran to the knights who all appeared to be salivating at the opportunity of
00:01:54
striking him dead right then and there.
00:01:56
There was one particularly huge knight near the middle.
00:02:00
Raelan pointed at him and grinned, running straight at him.
00:02:04
The knight set his legs and swung his sword in front of him.
00:02:07
With a slight leap, Raelan feigned a punch.
00:02:10
The knight brought up his sword only to see Raelan dive toward his feet.
00:02:14
Just as the guard brought his sword down, Raelan slid between his legs, the
00:02:19
smooth marble of the tower floor offering little resistance.
00:02:23
It wasn't a perfect fit, which was fine for Raelan.
00:02:26
He tugged on the knight's white cloak, which pulled him up and the knight backward.
00:02:30
As the knight fell, he got in the way of the other knights.
00:02:34
By the time they had realized what had happened, Raelan was in the grass field beyond the tower's
00:02:39
large iron doors. He had escaped so quickly that there was confusion as
00:02:44
shouts and alarm claxons rang. Shouts of, "Stop him!" were
00:02:48
followed by knights looking around for whom they were supposed to stop.
00:02:52
"This is almost too easy," Raelan thought, as a cry of,
00:02:57
"Stop the craftsman!" came from the tower.
00:03:00
Moments later, an arrow hit the ground at Raelan's feet.
00:03:04
Yellow tunic surrounded by white, archers on the wall.
00:03:08
"Not good," Raelan thought. And then he saw it, a large wagon with four
00:03:13
horses pulling it. It was on the side of the road with a broken wheel.
00:03:16
"Thank you, Mela," Raelan thought. He zigzagged through the field,
00:03:21
arrows barely missing him. Sprinting around the wagon, he stopped as it
00:03:26
shielded him from the archers on the wall.
00:03:29
He quickly pulled off his yellow tunic and tossed it on the ground.
00:03:33
With a quick sprint, he ran up and leapt onto the back of one of the horses at the
00:03:38
front of the wagon.
00:03:40
The horse was muscular and rested, and with a kick, Raelan was off.
00:03:45
Another skill that few knew that Raelan had mastered was riding horses.
00:03:50
When he was younger on his parents' property in the Upper Triangle, he would ride his
00:03:55
favorite horse way out to the outer fields, where he would steal fruit from the
00:03:59
orchards.
00:04:01
Without fail, a guard would chase him on horseback.
00:04:04
But Raelan on a horse was perhaps more agile and slippery than
00:04:09
Raelan on his feet. He would leap hay bales and take tight turns
00:04:14
around trees and gallop along treacherous creek beds.
00:04:19
His adventures ended one day when Polo visited his father.
00:04:23
From that point on, Raelan had not ridden a horse.
00:04:27
Yet, as he took off down the road on the back of the mighty steed, it felt like he had never
00:04:32
missed a day of riding in his life.
00:04:35
The rhythm of the gallop felt natural as Raelan leaned forward and let the horse guide
00:04:39
him.
00:04:40
The trouble was that outrunning the news of the prison escape didn't matter.
00:04:45
He was already the subject of a citywide manhunt.
00:04:49
He'd get to the Great Bridge, and the fact that he now wasn't wearing a guild color combined
00:04:54
with the expectation that he would escape to the old quarter meant that everyone on
00:04:59
the bridge would target his approach before he was within a hundred yards.
00:05:04
Still, he had no choice. The horse raced away from the great gate up River Road, the
00:05:09
river to his right and the flats to his left.
00:05:13
The sun was setting and the road was thick with traffic as crowds of
00:05:17
people were making their way to the flats from their work in the harvest fields or the
00:05:22
mines.
00:05:24
He passed coaches, wagons, horsemen, and crowds of people walking along the
00:05:28
road. He raced past a knight on horseback, and his speed betrayed him
00:05:33
as the knight called out-
00:05:35
Hey you, what is the hurry?
00:05:36
The knight immediately started to pursue Raelan.
00:05:41
There were too many people to put distance between Raelan and his pursuer, so he took a hard
00:05:46
left into the flats. The knight was not too far behind, and Raelan galloped
00:05:51
as fast as the horse would go, and then he would take hard turns into paths that led
00:05:55
behind houses.
00:05:58
Glancing over his shoulder, Raelan could not believe that the knight was still
00:06:02
pursuing him.
00:06:04
In fact, the knight was catching up."He's a good rider,"
00:06:09
Raylan thought. "Let's see if he's fearless though."
00:06:12
Raylan patted the neck of the horse. "Be strong and trust me."
00:06:17
Raylan turned to the back of one house and a large hedge that separated
00:06:22
its rear yard from the rear yard of a backing house.
00:06:26
The hedge must have been about five feet tall.
00:06:29
Raylan kicked the horse and leaned down as the horse leapt the hedge.
00:06:33
The horse stumbled as it landed, but Raylan held on.
00:06:37
Glancing over his shoulder, Raylan smiled. The knight did not attempt the jump.
00:06:42
He still wasn't far, so Raylan gave the horse a kick and led it across another lawn
00:06:47
and another jump.
00:06:49
This one was lower but more dangerous as it was a fence with sharp edges extending
00:06:54
up.
00:06:55
After clearing the jump, Raylan yanked the horse to the west and they galloped
00:06:59
back toward the Great Bridge. "You did me a favor, knight," Raylan
00:07:04
thought. "Even those pursuing me won't know where I'm at now."
00:07:09
As he reentered River Road, Raylan had to slow his horse to a walk.
00:07:13
He was closer to the bridge and a steady stream of people flowed into the road, clogging
00:07:18
it and making a fast pace impossible.
00:07:21
Something he had never considered before suddenly dawned on him.
00:07:25
"There are hundreds of guild members that live in the Wretched Quarter.
00:07:29
All of these people in Harvest Guild colors, and even some Craftsman
00:07:34
colors, are heading to the Old Quarter.
00:07:38
They must live there and work on this side of the river."
00:07:42
The concept that so many guild members lived in the Wretched Quarter shocked
00:07:48
Raylan.
00:07:49
It went against everything his Upper Triangle family had taught him.
00:07:54
Shaking his head at the continued uncovering of his own ignorance, Raylan looked at
00:07:59
the bridge in the distance. It was a massive structure that crossed the nearly
00:08:03
mile-wide Great River.
00:08:05
Rocks and steel were combined in one of the greatest of architectural
00:08:10
feats,
00:08:11
a bridge that expanded the original city of Ness over the river into the lush
00:08:16
fields that would soon become the new center of the city.
00:08:21
Raylan knew little about the Wretched Quarter, no, not Wretched Quarter, Old
00:08:25
Quarter, I must call it the Old Quarter, across the bridge.
00:08:30
He had been taught that it was full of murderers and thieves and the squalid poor who
00:08:35
did no work and lived off of cheating the hardworking citizens on his
00:08:40
family's side of the river.
00:08:42
Yet now he felt a new interest in it and its citizens.
00:08:46
The Thieves' Tower was there, but what other artifacts of the old city
00:08:51
remained? Were there other guild towers now abandoned?
00:08:56
What about the ash fields? He did know that the entire move across the river was
00:09:00
due to over-farming and the need to abandon the fields that no longer could grow
00:09:05
crops. Were those fields truly covered in ash?
00:09:10
These thoughts went through Raylan's mind as he slowly made his way to what he hoped would be
00:09:15
nothing more than a shout from one of the knights, and then him rushing past on the
00:09:19
back of the horse.
00:09:21
He wanted to be within just a few yards or even feet of those looking for
00:09:26
him before they noticed him.
00:09:29
Then they wouldn't have time to organize any kind of true barrier.
00:09:34
He was over a hundred yards away, however, when an alarm sounded.
00:09:39
Raylan looked up and a group of men in armor and blue capes was pointing at him.
00:09:44
To his horror, there were dozens of them.
00:09:46
"I'm not going to be able to dodge all of them," Raylan thought.
