The Thieves Guild

00:00:04
by Jake Kerr.

00:00:09
Season 3.

00:00:13
Episode 41.

00:00:18
Picking up the pieces.

00:00:25
Some limped, some walked, some carried others, some

00:00:30
were left dead in the streets.

00:00:33
Despite their losses, the force that the Merchant Guild sent to defend the city

00:00:37
arrived at Merchant Tower with their heads held high.

00:00:41
Rogers couldn't help but marvel what he had witnessed on the Great Road.

00:00:46
The outlander force was orders of magnitude greater than anyone in Ness would

00:00:51
have expected. Everyone knew, or had believed, that the

00:00:55
outlanders were simply desperate poor raiders that stole food and

00:01:00
raided the outer field stores. How could they have an army?

00:01:05
The fact that the massive Harvest Guild populace from the expansive Lower Quarter

00:01:10
were just across the Great Bridge and ready to pour over to attack the outlanders was a

00:01:15
stroke of luck that had literally saved the city.

00:01:18
He didn't want to think of how many Harvest Guild members had died doing so.

00:01:23
As seemed to always happen, Rogers took over.

00:01:27
Dervish had died, foolishly, Rogers thought.

00:01:31
It was something he would not have said out loud until Karch met him within the tower.

00:01:36
Karch's arms were crossed and he looked thoughtful.

00:01:40
But what struck Rogers the most was the horrible brown and blue bruises that

00:01:45
appeared to cover every inch of his exposed body.

00:01:48
"Who are you?" "I'm Rogers, sir. I joined the force and helped guide us

00:01:53
back to the tower."

00:01:54
No one else spoke up or contradicted Roger's statement that he was leading them.

00:01:59
"Where's Dervish?" "He perished attacking the retreating outlander force.

00:02:05
He was quite brave." "He was an idiot.

00:02:07
Bravery without forethought is no different than foolishness." Karch peered at Rogers.

00:02:12
"And what did you do?" Before Rogers could speak, a bloodied guard

00:02:17
stepped forward. "He saved us, Guild Master.

00:02:20
While Dervish was rushing forward at the retreating army, Rogers here ran up and down the line

00:02:25
shouting for us all to retreat."

00:02:28
Karch once again turned to Rogers. "And why did you do that, Rogers?"

00:02:33
Rogers had a few options: be humble, be confident, or

00:02:38
attack Dervish's leadership.

00:02:40
He was facing Karch, and Rogers knew enough about him to know that saying the wrong

00:02:45
thing could turn out really badly for him.

00:02:49
Still, Karch tipped his hand earlier, so Rogers went with the

00:02:54
blunt and harsh truth. "Because attacking a much larger retreating force

00:02:59
seemed foolish, and a needless risk of life and limb."

00:03:03
Karch stared at Rogers for an uncomfortably long time.

00:03:07
He then turned to an older guard. "What do you think?" "I have always

00:03:12
admired Dervish, sir, but I must agree that he let his courage get in the way of

00:03:16
common sense." "I agree."

00:03:19
Karch turned back to Rogers. "We face challenging times.

00:03:23
I don't need dumb courage, I need wise decisions." Karch tapped his chin with a

00:03:28
finger. "It seems I need a new captain of the tower.

00:03:32
Rogers, I believe this would be an excellent use of your skills."

00:03:36
Captain of the Merchant Tower. That would mean Rogers would be locked in the

00:03:41
merchant complex most of his day. He not only wouldn't be as effective for

00:03:46
the thieves there, it wasn't anything he wanted to do.

00:03:49
"Sir, if you don't mind,

00:03:52
I've lived my whole life in the Flats and Lower Quarter.

00:03:55
I'm honored at your faith in me, but I'd prefer to return to my shop."

00:03:59
Rogers was expecting some kind of rebuke and possibly punishment, but

00:04:04
Karch returned to his thoughtful look.

00:04:06
"Well, thanks to Larson's idiocy and Kerris' childishness, we have lost two

00:04:11
captains in the Lower Quarter recently.

00:04:13
Rogers, as you know, we have historically had three captains in the Lower Quarter.

00:04:18
One for the Warehouse and Merchant Districts, one for the Flats, and one for the Lower Triangle."

00:04:23
Karch took a few steps and slapped Rogers on the back.

00:04:27
"That's two captains too many. You're now my captain of the Lower Quarter." Before

00:04:32
Rogers could even consider a reply, Karch smiled and patted Rogers'

00:04:36
shoulder. "Before you speak, know that this is not a request."

00:04:41
Captain of the Lower Quarter. Rogers was having trouble comprehending what that

00:04:46
meant for him. "You can thank me later."

00:04:49
And as Karch turned to leave, Rogers realized that he was now the captain of the

00:04:54
Lower Quarter for the Thieves Guild, the Harvest Guild, and the Merchant

00:04:59
Guild.

00:05:01
Vilhelm's forces made their way slowly down Dragon Road.

00:05:05
There were many injured, and the losses left behind were substantial, yet they

00:05:10
were not followed, and that told Vilhelm something important: Ness

00:05:15
was poorly prepared for any kind of attack.

00:05:19
That pitchforks and broomsticks beat his army was a bitter blow,

00:05:24
but the mountains of dead it took to defeat him was not sustainable, especially

00:05:29
if he was better prepared.

00:05:31
He stood up on his horseback and looked back toward the mighty wall of Ness

00:05:36
falling back in the distance behind him. "Yes," he thought.

00:05:40
"We are beaten, but we are not broken." "What next,

00:05:45
Crown?" It was his general, a brilliant man named Breton,

00:05:50
who lived his life raiding the outer fields.

00:05:53
He sat on his own mighty steed, glancing at Vilhelm staring behind

00:05:58
him.

00:05:59
Vilhelm returned his attention to their long march back to Gautland.

00:06:03
"We prepare better,

00:06:05
"I... We were surprised by a much larger force of civilians, sir.

00:06:10
I did not expect them to rally so quickly."

00:06:12
"They didn't rally."

00:06:14
Vilhelm was sure of it.

00:06:16
It was luck that stopped them, nothing more, nothing less.

00:06:20
"They were there for a reason unrelated to our attack.

00:06:24
Perhaps it is related to the politics the Guildmaster thief warned me of."

00:06:28
Vilhelm turned to Bretin. "You ask what is next?

00:06:32
What is next is that we will attack again, but first, we will prepare with deception and

00:06:37
infiltration."

00:06:38
With a kick, Vilhelm urged his horse forward.

00:06:42
He didn't look back again for the remainder of the march back to Gautland.

00:06:48
Before Raylan could get to a bath and clean the stench from the sewers off him, Reif

00:06:53
ran up to him from the staircase and gave him a big hug.

00:06:56
"Raylan, you are a sight for sore eyes.

00:06:59
This guildmastering thing is not for me."

00:07:01
Before Raylan could reply, Reif shoved him away.

00:07:05
"Good God, man. You smell worse than after the Founder's Day parade."

00:07:08
"It appears guildmastering requires regular immersion in filth for our guild."

00:07:14
Raylan laughed.

00:07:15
"Let me get cleaned up. We have a lot to talk about."

00:07:18
"We do, but before you go, guess who is here?"

00:07:20
"Allard has returned?"

00:07:23
Reif's face fell.

00:07:24
"No, he is still on his mission."

00:07:27
Reif's smile returned.

00:07:29
"Mayla is here, and you will not believe her story.

00:07:32
As you said, we have a lot to talk about."

00:07:35
"If I know Mayla, whatever mission she was on, she left behind lots of

00:07:39
grumbling and angry people."

00:07:41
"Quite the opposite, but get cleaned up.

00:07:43
I'll have your study made ready."

00:07:46
Raylan took a very long bath. He felt in no hurry, as the

00:07:50
Outlanders were fleeing, and with Mayla back, that meant that Pola was warned of

00:07:55
the danger to the Harvest Guild and of his own personal danger.

00:08:00
Things appeared to have returned to some semblance of normalcy.

00:08:04
It was after drying off, dressing in his Guildmaster garb and entering his study

00:08:09
that he realized how wrong he was.

00:08:12
As Raylan entered the room, the greetings rang out, but the only thing he could

00:08:17
focus on was that he didn't recognize half of the people.

00:08:21
"Guildmaster."

00:08:23
"Raylan, you look much better."

00:08:24
"He smells better too."

00:08:26
Raylan smiled at that, but couldn't take his eyes off the woman to the left of

00:08:31
Mayla. She looked serious and thoughtful, but what really caught Raylan's

00:08:36
eyes was her dark, flowing brown hair, deep brown eyes,

00:08:41
almost black, and her stunningly beautiful face.

00:08:45
Her darker skin was a sharp contrast to pale Rebecca, who sat to the

00:08:50
woman's left and somehow faded into the background next to her.

00:08:54
The woman wore the black of the Thieves Guild, but Raylan didn't recognize her.

00:08:59
"Guildmaster."

00:09:01
The voice drew Raylan's attention. It

00:09:04
was a man sitting to Mayla's right who looked to be about 10 years older than Raylan.

00:09:09
"Well met, all of you, but I fear I see some new faces whom I don know,

00:09:14
while we are missing others. Are there no captains in attendance?"

00:09:18
Raylan turned to Felos, who shook his head.

00:09:21
"This is Darla."

00:09:23
Raylan turned to the beautiful woman who Mayla was nodding at.

00:09:26
"She is my...

00:09:28
partner."

00:09:30
Partner? What did that mean?

00:09:33
Raylan bowed his head to her.

00:09:35
"Darla, it is wonderful to have you here.

00:09:39
Mayla is a valued and trusted member of the guild.

00:09:43
Her word on your behalf is all I need to hear."

00:09:46
"And this is Prosper."

00:09:48
Mayla motioned to the man who also wore the black of the guild.

00:09:52
"Well met, Prosper. I fear I am at a disadvantage, as I know little about

00:09:57
both of you."

00:09:58
Raylan sat at his seat, a raised chair that faced those arrayed around the

00:10:03
table and across from him. He glanced at Rebecca, who sat at the end of the

00:10:08
table to Raylan's left. Her face was hard to read.

00:10:12
She looked intrigued, almost tentative, but Raylan realized he couldn't

00:10:17
differentiate between Rebecca being bemused and being serious, or

00:10:22
even her being angry. She was always so... calm.

00:10:27
He was unsure if she had introduced herself to everyone, and Raylan was about to do so

00:10:32
when Reif spoke up.

00:10:33
"Raylan, you will not believe this. Remember when I told you about Dragon Road and the path through the

00:10:38
mountain and the city on the other side, also named Ness?"

00:10:41
"I do."

00:10:42
"Prosper is from that Ness. It is the home of the Magic Guild."

00:10:45
Before Raylan could respond, before he could even fathom what Reif had said,

00:10:50
Prosper cleared his throat.

00:10:52
"It is not the home of the Magic Guild.

00:10:55
There are no guilds in Ness.

00:10:57
The magicians rule the city, but they are not a guild.

00:11:01
They are tyrants."

00:11:02
Raylan had no time to comprehend what he was hearing when his thoughts were interrupted

00:11:07
once again.

00:11:08
"Impossible! The mountain came down and blocked the road."

00:11:13
Raylan turned to Rebecca, who was almost unrecognizable.

00:11:17
She looked a combination of angry and frightened.

00:11:21
"Be that as it may..."

00:11:23
Prosper pointed a finger at Rebecca, and the glass of water in front of her

00:11:28
raised into the air, floating in front of her face.

00:11:31
"It is so."

00:11:33
Raylan was stunned. The glass just floated as still as if it had been resting

00:11:38
on the table.

00:11:39
And for the third time, before he could respond, his thoughts were

00:11:44
interrupted. Rebecca slapped at the glass, sending it flying across

00:11:49
the room, where it crashed to the floor, breaking into shards.

00:11:53
"Rebecca!" She stood up without replying, shoved her chair

00:11:57
back, and marched across the room. Everyone stared as her dress

00:12:02
billowed behind her as she exited through the wide door without so much as a

00:12:07
comment. As everyone sat in silence, Raylan finally

00:12:12
found his voice. "It appears we have much to discuss.

00:12:16
Prosper, you are welcome to our guild.

00:12:19
I will talk to Rebecca."

00:12:21
Prosper shrugged.

00:12:22
Raylan turned back to Mayla. "You succeeded in your mission."

00:12:27
"I did, but there is more to the story.

00:12:30
Polo imprisoned me in the mines."

00:12:32
Mayla proceeded to relay her and Darla's story, starting with Polo's

00:12:37
anger and hatred of anyone that crossed him, which Reiff reinforced by

00:12:42
sharing Polo's letter to the Thieves Guild.

00:12:45
Mayla then continued her story, highlighting Darla's resourcefulness

00:12:50
and bravery as they made their way through the mountain and back.

00:12:55
As she outlined Katrina's death, Raylan glanced over at Prosper,

00:13:00
who sat stone-faced and emotionless.

00:13:04
"Darla, thank you for your courage and kindness to the guild and to Mayla."

00:13:09
"It is I who should be thanking Mayla, Guild Master.

00:13:12
She has saved me."

00:13:14
And in that moment, their relationship clarified right in front of Raylan,

00:13:19
as Darla, who Raylan now noticed was muscular and lithe, and

00:13:23
indeed impressive alongside her beauty, took Mayla's hand.

00:13:28
Mayla, the sarcastic, tough and blunt blade, responded by

00:13:33
lowering her head to Darla's shoulder.

00:13:35
"While I am glad that you are both safe here, what are the latest

00:13:40
developments? Any word on Keres? Have we heard from Simpson?

00:13:45
Perhaps he can speak better of us to Polo.

00:13:48
And what is happening with Polo?"

00:13:50
"Simpson is who delivered Polo's letter.

00:13:53
He was to share its contents to the Harvest Guild members in the old quarter."

00:13:56
"And you allowed that?"

00:13:58
"Yes."

00:14:00
Raylan nodded his head. It was challenging, but indeed the right thing to

00:14:05
do. "Good. Our actions will speak louder than any of Polo's words.

00:14:11
And what of Quinto?

00:14:12
Do we know of how his attempt to overthrow Sax has gone?"

00:14:16
Before anyone could reply, Raylan added, "And where is Allard?

00:14:21
I could use his counsel." As if in reply, there was a loud rap on the

00:14:26
door. Raylan glanced over, and to his shock, watched as Vesper,

00:14:31
the double-crossing blade of the Craft Guild, walked in.

00:14:35
He was covered in dust and blood and dried mud.

00:14:39
He took a tentative step forward, but paused when Felos stepped forward and put

00:14:44
his hand on the hilt of his sword.

00:14:46
"Do you think I got this far as an enemy to the guild, you fool?"

00:14:51
Despite his comment, Vesper remained in the doorway, and didn't challenge

00:14:55
Felos.

00:14:56
"Alas, Guild Master, I did my best. I freed Allard from the

00:15:01
Harvest prison, but he died at the gate."

00:15:04
Vesper lowered his head.

00:15:05
"We were so close and he gave his life for me to escape."

00:15:10
Vesper looked up, and his face looked drawn and haunted.

00:15:14
"Why would he do that?"

00:15:18
Quinto had set up his base of operations in the cramped but secure

00:15:23
Nightwatch, a smaller tower that overlooked the outer fields, and also

00:15:28
presented access to the wall.

00:15:30
He was awaiting word on how his forces were doing as they marched a very long

00:15:35
corridor atop the wall to the Night Guild tower.

00:15:38
His expectations were positive, but grim.

00:15:42
There was no way to maneuver or outflank or strategically deal

00:15:46
unexpected blows to the drunken and foolish Sax's defenses.

00:15:51
He had to use brute force, and unfortunately, brute force was Sax's

00:15:55
strength.

00:15:57
His hope was that Sax would do something stupid, but he was unsure how

00:16:02
that would happen, if it did.

00:16:04
The answer came in the form of his lieutenant, Jaxon, who rushed along the wall

00:16:09
to the Nightwatch and Quinto's makeshift office with his hand clenched in a

00:16:14
fist. The man entered Quinto's quarters gasping for breath as he

00:16:19
bent over, one hand holding his knee for support.

00:16:22
As the man's breathing slowly returned to normal, Quinto stood up and

00:16:27
approached him.

00:16:28
"What word, Jaxon? Do we make progress?"

00:16:32
In response, the man stood up straight, smiled widely and held out

00:16:37
his fist, opening his fingers to reveal the seal of the Night Guild

00:16:42
still attached to Sax's severed finger.
