Episode 36:
00:00:15
Teal's Message.
00:00:24
Things went perfectly, and after an hour, Maylor found herself guarding
00:00:29
the entrance to Harvest House.
00:00:32
The moment the other guard passed around the corner and out of sight as he headed for the rear
00:00:37
of the building, Maylor walked up to the entrance and entered the courtyard.
00:00:42
There was a single guard in the courtyard, and Maylor noticed several guards on
00:00:47
the wall. They were obviously familiar with Teal, however, and they didn't give Maylor
00:00:52
a second glance as she walked up to the main doors.
00:00:56
She had a moment of panic, thinking that they may have been locked, but they weren't, and
00:01:01
Maylor entered without issue.
00:01:03
As soon as she entered, Maylor quickly scanned the entryway.
00:01:07
There were two guards at the base of the staircase and two more standing guard over
00:01:12
the entrance, one of whom was marching toward her. "What are you doing?
00:01:16
Why aren't you at your post?" The guard was in full armor and Maylor couldn't see his
00:01:21
face.
00:01:22
I have an important message for the guild master.
00:01:25
Tim sent me."
00:01:27
The guard didn't have his hand on the pommel of his sword, which was a good sign, but his
00:01:31
stance was confrontational as he looked Maylor up and down.
00:01:35
"Why isn't he delivering the message himself?"
00:01:38
"I don't know. Why don't you ask him?
00:01:42
He seemed to be in a bad mood, mentioning something about Deputy Esma being off in the outer fields while Tim
00:01:46
had to run around chasing enemies."
00:01:49
Maylor figured the details would lend credence to her story, but they were
00:01:54
a risk. She wasn't sure that Esma was actually at the outer fields, and she
00:01:59
wasn't sure that Tim had as much power as she had assessed.
00:02:02
To her relief, the guard nodded. "What is the message?"
00:02:06
"He said I was to repeat it to no one but the guild master."
00:02:10
Maylor lowered her voice and glanced over at the guards near the steps.
00:02:14
"The word spy was used."
00:02:17
The guard stared at Maylor for an uncomfortably long time, but then yelled out to the
00:02:22
guards at the steps. "Let her through.
00:02:25
She has a message for the guild master." Maylor bowed her head to the guard, turned, and
00:02:30
walked briskly up the steps to the second floor.
00:02:32
She had passed the first two obstacles: getting into Harvest House at night, and getting
00:02:37
past the first-floor guards.
00:02:40
There were another four guards on the landing of the second floor.
00:02:44
Despite the chaotic nature of the Harvest Guild guards' living arrangements,
00:02:49
Maylor had to admit that the guild defenses were rather strong and the guards
00:02:53
disciplined.
00:02:55
Of course, it helped that Harvest House appeared to have only a single point of entry,
00:03:00
making limited defenses all that was required.
00:03:05
As on the first floor, a single guard approached.
00:03:08
Maylor was tempted to repeat her story and just walk right up the stairs to Polo's quarters,
00:03:13
but she knew that while it may have worked on the first-floor guards, it wouldn't work with the
00:03:17
guards on the third floor. They were Polo's personal attachment and were too savvy to allow a low-level
00:03:23
guard to just walk in to see the guild master while he was under threat of assassination.
00:03:27
So, she spun a new story. "What's your business here, Teal?" "Damn, he
00:03:32
knows Teal," Maylor thought. Lowering her voice to a whisper, which Maylor
00:03:37
hoped would both disguise her voice and lend it more gravitas, she
00:03:42
replied, "I'm here to provide a message to one of the guards in the guild hall and to replace him on
00:03:47
duty." Maylor lowered her head. The guard stepped forward.
00:03:51
Why? What is going on? Is it Richard?
00:03:52
"Yes, it is Richard.
00:03:55
There has been a tragedy with his family.
00:03:57
I am to deliver the message and take his place."
00:04:00
By the gods, it isn't his daughter, is it? She's the sweetest thing.
00:04:03
I saw her a fortnight ago, playing in the fields.
00:04:06
The guard was visibly distressed and had completely given up any
00:04:10
thought of questioning Maylor's motives.
00:04:12
"I fear it is. She is deathly ill. There is talk she won't make it through the
00:04:17
night."
00:04:18
The news clearly stunned the guard.
00:04:22
Gods, no. That is such horrible news.
00:04:24
The guard stood up straight.
00:04:26
Such a message should be delivered by a friend.
00:04:29
I will deliver the news," the guard said emphatically, turning to the door to the hall.
00:04:33
"As you wish, but I am to take his place guarding the hall."
00:04:38
Of course. Follow me."
00:04:39
The guard started walking to the door, but then stopped and turned to face Maylor.
00:04:44
"Thank you, Teal.
00:04:45
I know you and Richard have had...
00:04:47
difficulties."
00:04:49
Nodding her head, Maylor followed the guard into the hall.
00:04:53
She watched at a distance as the guard went up to Richard and quietly spoke to
00:04:58
him.
00:04:59
Richard's whole body appeared to just slump as his guard friend put his hand on
00:05:04
Richard's shoulder. Richard nodded as the guard said something, and the two of them
00:05:09
hurried down the aisle and out of the hall.
00:05:11
They didn't look twice at Maylor as they passed.
00:05:15
Thankfully, there was only one other guard in the room.
00:05:17
He was guarding the dais to the left of the throne.
00:05:21
Maylor walked over to him. As she got close, he said. "Is that you, Teal?
00:05:25
What was that all about?" In her right hand, Maylor twisted a seal, and the poison flowed
00:05:30
into a sharp needle that was hidden in her palm. She had a simple plan.
00:05:36
She was going to pretend to trip, and as the other guard reached out to help her, she would
00:05:41
stab the needle into the unprotected palm of his hand.
00:05:45
The trouble was that as she tripped, the guard didn't move to help.
00:05:49
Maylor was so surprised that she almost stabbed herself as she stumbled to the floor at the
00:05:54
feet of the guard. "Oof,"
00:05:56
she let out as she landed on her knees.
00:05:58
"Honestly, Teal, I don't know how you continue to be a guard.
00:06:02
You are slow and clumsy."The guard's voice was full of disdain.
00:06:07
"You can only lead Tim on for so long. Eventually, you're going to
00:06:12
have to get together with him or he'll kick you out of the guards for being incompetent."
00:06:16
Maela thought back to the long march that Teel made every day to fulfill
00:06:21
her dream of being a guard.
00:06:24
Maela was certain the dedication, the fortitude and the honor in Teel's
00:06:28
small frame was greater than anything this guard could dream of achieving.
00:06:33
Reaching up, Maela grabbed the guard's leg, sliding the needle through the soft leather
00:06:38
behind his knee and into his skin. "Ow,"
00:06:42
the guard replied as Maela used his leg to help her get her balance and stand.
00:06:47
"Sorry." Maela held up her armored hand.
00:06:51
"Must be a sharp metal edge on these gauntlets." "I swear I will personally have
00:06:56
Tim remove you from duty, Teel,"
00:06:58
the guard growled as he rubbed his leg.
00:07:01
The poison took as much as two minutes to work, so she turned and walked over to the other side of the
00:07:06
dais to Guard. "Hey, I asked what happened with Richard."
00:07:10
Maela didn't reply. The guard marched over, anger evident in every one
00:07:15
of his pounding footsteps. "Answer me." Whispering again, Maela
00:07:20
replied. "It is none of your business." "None of my business?" The
00:07:25
guard held up his gauntleted hand as if to strike Maela and added, "How about I make it my
00:07:30
business?"
00:07:31
As Maela considered how best to reply, the guard stumbled and then
00:07:36
fell in a heap, the clang of his armor absorbed by the lush vegetation all
00:07:41
around.
00:07:43
Undisturbed in the guild hall, Maela couldn't quite believe it.
00:07:47
All she had to do was find the secret passage to the Guildmaster's quarters and
00:07:52
her mission would be complete.
00:07:55
But could she find the passage in time?
