Episode 22:
00:00:13
The Safe House.
00:00:24
Knights were everywhere in the flats, and Maela knew it was only a matter of time before the
00:00:28
alarm would be raised that Raylan's attempt to free his friends hadn't failed, and the
00:00:33
knights' attention turned to them.
00:00:36
They worked their way down one street and then over to another one.
00:00:40
Each turn revealed more knights looking here and there.
00:00:44
Maela was shocked that none of the knights even gave them a second glance, despite the fact
00:00:49
that the knights were looking around and peering at everyone.
00:00:52
"They are looking for Raylan," she thought.
00:00:55
"Follow me," Allard whispered as he ushered them into a
00:00:59
nondescript house with a large hedge in the back, which provided the house with
00:01:04
more privacy than most.
00:01:07
They were met by a rotund man who wore the green of the Harvest Guild.
00:01:12
Allard grabbed his forearm. "Deely, you're a sight for sore eyes.
00:01:16
What word?" "Strange times, Allard," Deely replied as he walked them into his
00:01:21
drawing room, which had wing-back chairs and a large couch.
00:01:25
Rafe sat down on the couch next to Maela, while Deely and Allard took the chairs
00:01:30
facing each other. "I was sitting in this very chair reading when there was a pounding on
00:01:35
my front door. I was confronted by knights looking for the guild master."
00:01:39
Deely leaned forward. "He was seen in these parts on horseback.
00:01:43
Any word on him?" "Ah, that is good news, my friend.
00:01:47
We have no word on the guild master. As you may be aware, I have been framed for the deaths in the
00:01:52
Merchant Guild. Maela and Guild Master Raylan freed me, and he escaped on
00:01:57
horseback, which I hope means he is safe." "We can only hope."
00:02:02
Deely looked at Rafe. "And who is this?" "I'm a new member of the Thieves Guild,"
00:02:07
Rafe replied, sitting up straight. Deely peered at Rafe, and then replied,
00:02:12
"There is no such thing as the Thieves Guild.
00:02:14
It is purely ceremonial."
00:02:17
Rafe smiled widely. "Sure, and I was captured and beaten at the founder's banquet
00:02:22
helping the guild master thief for ceremonial reasons."
00:02:25
A broad smile filled Deely's face. "You did that?
00:02:29
Good show, boy. Jolly good show."
00:02:31
He turned to Allard. "I had a delivery today and will be returning to the Warehouse District
00:02:36
tomorrow. I can carry you in the back of my wagon.
00:02:39
You can cross the wall and make your way back to the tower through the plains."
00:02:43
"That is very kind of you, my friend, but we need to get to the Old Quarter and the guild
00:02:48
tower immediately.
00:02:50
We should be there to help the guild master."
00:02:53
Maela spoke up. "I agree. We need to get to Raylan as quickly as possible.
00:02:57
He has no idea who will help him. We don't even know if he'll get across the Great Bridge.
00:03:02
My fear is that he'll be overwhelmed as he attempts to cross."
00:03:05
Rafe snorted. "I would like to see anyone try to get their hands on Raylan in the open with him
00:03:10
prepared.
00:03:11
Why do you think I'm the one who always ends up getting beaten?
00:03:14
Raylan escapes, and I get caught."
00:03:17
Maela raised an eyebrow. "One possibility is that our new guild master has a talent for
00:03:22
blaming others for his misdeeds."
00:03:24
Rafe's eyes went wide. "I am not saying that.
00:03:27
He is just resourceful." "Enough, you two."
00:03:31
Allard's deep voice filled the room.
00:03:33
"Being able to redirect attention is a critical part of the duties of the guild
00:03:38
master thief, so your description of Raylan is hardly an insult, Rafe."
00:03:42
Maela nodded, and then replied, "Even if he is the most talented escape
00:03:47
artist in history, we should assist him.
00:03:50
Assuming he makes it to the Old Quarter, how many will even know who he is?
00:03:54
I've spread the word, but I don't know how widely it has traveled.
00:03:57
Without knowing him, they may mislead him, or worse."
00:04:00
Maela stood up and started pacing. "We could make Deely's wagon appear to be fully loaded,
00:04:05
and then we could sit in the back as he heads up River Road.
00:04:08
He could tell the night protectors that he has a delivery." "That is a good plan,"
00:04:13
Allard replied. "And I agree with you about Raylan.
00:04:17
Even if he gets across the bridge, there is much that could cause us problems on the other side, since the
00:04:21
citizens there are unprepared." Allard cleared his throat.
00:04:25
"Things have moved too fast." "Fair enough, Deputy.
00:04:29
I'll get my wagon ready." Maela wasn't sure when or even if they would ever
00:04:34
see Raylan again, but the more she heard and saw of him, the more she thought he may
00:04:39
actually turn out to be an important asset to the guild.
00:04:44
As she climbed into Deely's wagon and under the tarp, she thought of her sadness over
00:04:48
Pietro's passing. He was the closest she had ever had to a father, and
00:04:53
his death hit her hard. So when she met the new guild master, she
00:04:58
instinctively hated him since he was filling Pietro's position, and yet he
00:05:02
wasn't Pietro.
00:05:04
But not being Pietro was an unfair criticism to lay at Raylan's feet,
00:05:11
even if he was an idiot.
