Episode 32:

00:00:15
The Tower Balcony.

00:00:24
Rafe still marveled over the majesty of the Thieves Tower.

00:00:28
The tower was massive, by far the largest in Ness, and yet no one across the

00:00:33
river knew it even existed.

00:00:35
Granted, it was as far west and south from Ness City proper as you could go, and it

00:00:40
stood at the base of the Sheer Mountains that formed the south of the city, so it

00:00:45
was perfectly camouflaged against the stone of the mountain.

00:00:49
Still, it was not hard to see from everywhere in Ness if you knew what to look for.

00:00:54
Additionally, it stood next to the wall.

00:00:57
Wouldn't the Night Guild know of its existence just from their

00:01:01
regular patrols? Rafe looked down at the top of the wall to look for the

00:01:06
white cloaks of the White Guard, but could only see a few figures dressed in black.

00:01:11
"Does the Night Guild even patrol this part of the wall?"

00:01:16
The entire top floor of the tower was used as the living quarters of the guild master,

00:01:21
and although Pietro didn't live there during his 70-plus year tenure as guild master,

00:01:26
it had been kept tidy, if spare.

00:01:29
It was certainly comfortable, and Rafe enjoyed looking at the ancient art

00:01:34
that filled the walls, images of battles long forgotten and heroes

00:01:38
unknown.

00:01:40
The books were a similar revelation.

00:01:42
The guild master's library contained more books than Rafe had ever seen in his life,

00:01:47
and the subjects were primarily of Ness itself; history, geology,

00:01:52
maps, and various guild histories. Some of the thickest books were on

00:01:57
things that Rafe had never heard of. The Baros Treaty, what was that?

00:02:01
Several books covered something called the Veritri Expedition.

00:02:06
Behind a stack of books covered in dust, there was even a very old book about the

00:02:10
history of the Magic Guild.

00:02:14
Rafe cracked it open, noted that the Magic Guild colors were red

00:02:19
and that the history of the guild ended before Ness was even founded.

00:02:23
Was it a book of fantastic myths? Rafe wasn't sure, but he

00:02:28
promised himself to spend more time in the library.

00:02:31
Beyond two glass doors was a balcony, and Rafe walked outside to once again enjoy

00:02:36
the view. He was so high up that it was dizzying, but the view was extraordinary.

00:02:42
The balcony was about 10 feet deep and twice that wide.

00:02:45
There was a weathered iron chair and a stone desk in one corner, while the rest was

00:02:50
bare.

00:02:51
The balcony was on the northeast side of the tower.

00:02:55
The Old Fork flowed along the right from the mountains to the Great River.

00:03:00
The Old Fork separated the Ash Fields from the Old Quarter.

00:03:05
The Ash Fields were still mostly dust and barren land, despite attempts

00:03:10
by the Thieves Guild to enrich the dirt over the years.

00:03:14
The Old Quarter was massive and full of ancient buildings arranged in

00:03:19
well-organized neighborhoods. It was about the size of the Flats, the Lower Triangle,

00:03:24
and the merchant and warehouse districts combined.

00:03:27
Across the Great River in the distance was the Ness Rafe had known his whole life.

00:03:33
The fields to his right were vibrant and full of the color that Rafe knew meant growing

00:03:38
fruit, grains, and vegetables.

00:03:41
His home in the Lower Triangle was somewhere in the mass of buildings.

00:03:45
Merchant Tower stood like a central beacon of all that Ness had become.

00:03:50
Standing as a smaller partner to the left was the Craft Tower, and surrounding it all

00:03:55
was the Great Wall, which protected Ness from invasion.

00:03:58
"So what do you see, Apprentice Rafe?" Rafe spun around to see Allard standing

00:04:03
behind him.

00:04:04
Allard's arms were crossed and his mighty sword swung slightly in its scabbard.

00:04:09
Rafe couldn't quite get over his fear of Allard, and while his ever-present hood was down, it was a

00:04:14
small improvement. The long scar across Allard's face was about as

00:04:19
intimidating as the shadow of the hood. Rafe shrugged.

00:04:22
"Two cities split by a river?"

00:04:25
Walking forward, Allard nodded. "It is as good an answer as any.

00:04:29
When the citizens abandoned the Old Quarter after the Golden Fields weren't so golden anymore, they

00:04:34
cruelly left behind those that couldn't afford to start anew.

00:04:37
At that moment, Ness became what you see below."

00:04:41
Allard pointed to the Old Quarter. "Those that worked hard for the good of the

00:04:45
city but couldn't afford to leave, and..."

00:04:49
He pointed across the river. "Those that wanted to start anew without the weight of compassion dragging

00:04:54
them down." "What of the Golden Fields?" Rafe asked.

00:04:58
And as soon as he asked, the answer hit him.

00:05:00
Allard must have noticed as he nodded, but didn't say anything.

00:05:03
"The Ash Fields, right?" "Yes. The Great River used to be the city's

00:05:08
protection to the north, but when the Golden Fields became barren, a bridge was built.

00:05:12
The people crossed and well..." Allard once again motioned out beyond the

00:05:16
balcony. "You can see the result."

00:05:19
There was a heaviness to Allard's words that exceeded a history lesson.

00:05:24
Rafe glanced back at Allard. "Something is happening, Allard, isn't it?

00:05:28
Something big." Allard sighed, took a step forward, and put his hand on Rafe's

00:05:32
shoulder. "I fear so, Rafe. Pietro spent his entire life hiding our guild

00:05:37
and the work we do to feed and shelter the many residents of the Old Quarter.

00:05:41
We take so we can give. It was a noble goal." "Was?"

00:05:45
"It's still a noble goal, but we are entering complex times and we need to do

00:05:50
more.

00:05:51
Pietro kept the guild from deeply infiltrating other guilds, from being involved in politics at

00:05:56
all. His fear, and he was absolutely correct, was that if we were discovered, all our

00:06:01
good works would be at risk. But your friend and our guild master did more than he

00:06:06
imagined in ruining his brother's plans." "Raylan has a habit of doing that."

00:06:11
Allard smiled. "So I have both heard and experienced.

00:06:16
Still, he illustrated that the selective use of the guild's power can do tremendous good in the

00:06:21
face of those that want to destroy the city as we know it."

00:06:24
Rafe nodded, but he wasn't quite sure he understood what Allard was getting at.

00:06:29
Mela was off warning Polo and Raylan was somewhere in the plains stopping Karch.

00:06:34
Those were good things to do, and the type of thing that Raylan would support wholeheartedly.

00:06:40
Allard had gone quiet, so Rafe finally responded.

00:06:43
"We are doing more." "Indeed, Rafe. We are doing more.

00:06:48
But are we doing enough?"
