00:00:09
(dramatic music) . Episode 81:

00:00:16
The Woodlands

00:00:21
(dramatic music) . Mailer was almost certain that their prison

00:00:26
was chosen for two reasons, it was remote and would make

00:00:31
escape difficult, and perhaps more importantly, it was so

00:00:35
beautiful and peaceful that it was a location you wouldn't want to escape

00:00:40
from. The effect was such that the first night was not about

00:00:44
urgently planning an escape so much as sharing notes and getting caught up on

00:00:49
everything that happened. Of course, there wasn't a whole lot to discuss.

00:00:54
The two of them had already shared the substance of their conversations while imprisoned in

00:00:59
the tower. A sense of wonder over the magic of the wizards dominated their

00:01:04
discussion.

00:01:05
"Do you think that the road through the mountain was created by the wizards with magic?"

00:01:10
Dala asked as she took a sip from a wooden cup full of delicious pure

00:01:15
water.

00:01:15
"I'm not sure. I was thinking that the wizards did create it, as it's a

00:01:20
paved road, not a rough trail. Travel said that the journey through the mountain was as difficult for

00:01:25
them as it was for us.

00:01:27
However, why build a paved road? They came through to escape Ness, not build a

00:01:32
road to link to it."

00:01:33
Mailer stabbed at some boiled vegetables.

00:01:36
"So, why was the road there, and who made it?" "Well, I don't think it is

00:01:41
possible for craftsmen to make such a road through pure stone without magic."

00:01:44
"Yes. The wizards must have made the road long before they blocked it,

00:01:49
but why?"

00:01:50
The question remained unanswered as the two of them

00:01:55
finished their meal.

00:01:57
They fell asleep in their own beds, awaking to the sound of

00:02:01
crackling wood and the delicious smell of roasted meat.

00:02:05
Mailer pulled on her new clothes from the wizards and walked into the next room,

00:02:11
finding Dala making breakfast. She walked over to help.

00:02:14
"Eggs!" Mailer exclaimed. She hadn't had

00:02:19
eggs in a very long time.

00:02:22
She grabbed the wooden spatula and took over the cooking of the eggs while Dala

00:02:27
stood next to her attending to the thinly sliced meat.

00:02:30
"Where are the hens?"

00:02:33
Dala shrugged.

00:02:34
"The eggs were in the pantry. There must be hens or chickens in the woods.

00:02:38
Either that or this is the last eggs we will have." "Until we escape."

00:02:42
"Yes."

00:02:44
Dala grinned. "How are you?"

00:02:47
Dala asked, affectionately bumping against Mailer with her shoulder.

00:02:52
"Better than in a long time.

00:02:54
I fear that I could get used to this."

00:02:56
"I was thinking the same thing, but we should investigate more.

00:03:00
A beautiful prison is still a prison,"

00:03:03
Mailer agreed, and they finished the cooking, moving the meal over to a

00:03:08
wooden table with two chairs at the edge of the kitchen.

00:03:12
The whole cabin had three rooms and roughly four living areas.

00:03:16
There was a large bedroom that took up the rear of the cabin, marked by a large

00:03:21
fireplace and a door that led out to the rear of the property.

00:03:25
There were two single beds, one on each side of the room.

00:03:29
Between the sleeping quarters and the living area was a separate space for bathing

00:03:34
with a large tub and a bathing furnace to warm water in a large kettle.

00:03:40
A sink with a pitcher stood across from the tub.

00:03:43
A small wooden building a short walk from the cabin housed the facilities for

00:03:48
relieving themselves.

00:03:50
The living room, if you could call it that, was open with the kitchen to the left and an open

00:03:55
space to relax across from it. Two comfortable chairs faced a large

00:03:59
fireplace. The table where the two of them sat was between the two

00:04:04
areas, acting as a de facto dining room.

00:04:08
The kitchen contained a pantry with room for salted meats and a counter

00:04:13
for preparing food. Cabinets above contained plates and cups.

00:04:18
The entire cabin was comfortable and perfect for two people to live in as they

00:04:23
enjoyed a rustic life.

00:04:25
Mailer was not focusing on that, however.

00:04:28
She played with the knife she was using to cut her meat.

00:04:32
It would make a decent weapon, but was weighted horribly and not at all good

00:04:36
for tossing accurately. With Dala's proficiency with knives, Mailer

00:04:41
decided to craft and weight the knives for her.

00:04:44
Thinking of Dala made her think of escaping.

00:04:48
Mailer still felt guilty over her comfort in living in the beautiful cabin and the

00:04:53
new world they found themselves in, but she knew Dala was intent on it, so

00:04:57
she thought of what it would take. There were no usable sacks or bags for carrying

00:05:02
supplies long distances. Nothing had wheels to repurpose for a journey.

00:05:07
"I said the bed is comfortable. Are you even listening?"

00:05:11
Dala looked annoyed.

00:05:12
"Oh, I'm sorry. I was just thinking of supplies to escape."

00:05:16
Mailer shrugged sheepishly. "Don't you think we should establish ourselves here first?

00:05:21
We need to prepare."

00:05:22
"Of course."

00:05:25
Dala's response made sense, and Mailer moved from feeling guilty about

00:05:30
planning for an escape that Dala wanted to feeling guilty for not paying

00:05:35
attention to Dala's commentary.

00:05:37
"Well, we have to make sure we have ways to hunt for food, and we should check the well.

00:05:42
It will be bad if it is dry and the only water we have is from the pitcher they left for us."

00:05:46
Dala nodded. "I checked the well. It's the same water."

00:05:51
She motioned toward their cups. "I'm just glad we finally have time to be together without being

00:05:56
half-starved, or living on rat blood."

00:05:59
She reached her hand across the table and held it there.

00:06:02
It took a moment before Mailer realized that she was expecting Mailer to take her

00:06:07
hand and hold it. She moved her hand toward Dala's so fast

00:06:12
to make up for the awkward pause that she knocked over her cup of water.

00:06:16
"Sorry."

00:06:19
Meila straightened the cup and tried to stop the water from flowing off the table with

00:06:24
her hand, stammering...

00:06:25
"I'm still assessing everything. It's just my nature."

00:06:28
...

00:06:30
Darla got up to find a towel and replied with a laugh.

00:06:33
"It's okay. It will take some time for us to figure things out."

00:06:37
Meila shoved the last few bites of her meal in her mouth and helped clean up as

00:06:42
Darla returned with a towel. With breakfast over, the two of them decided

00:06:47
to investigate their new home and take stock of both resources and

00:06:53
opportunities.

00:06:55
The cabin itself had basic supplies, a few days worth of food

00:06:59
and living supplies for two, plates, buckets, utensils,

00:07:04
skillets, and other tools and necessities.

00:07:08
To both of their surprise, they found a chest with clothing that would last a week or

00:07:13
so, breeches, tunics, and underwear,

00:07:16
all of it brand new, yet soft and well-made.

00:07:20
No rough-spun tunics or leather needing to be worn in to get comfortable.

00:07:25
Darla held up a cotton shirt that had a thin line of red down the

00:07:30
seam.

00:07:30
"Magic guild colors,"

00:07:32
...

00:07:33
she exclaimed, lifting the shirt she was wearing over her head.

00:07:37
She wasn't wearing anything underneath, and Meila turned away as Darla stood

00:07:42
half-naked before pulling on the wizard shirt.

00:07:46
Meila again found herself confused.

00:07:49
Darla was beautiful, and Meila was drawn to her.

00:07:53
The glance of Darla sliding off her top confirmed it, but it

00:07:58
just didn't seem right. They were survivors and adventurers,

00:08:03
tough women who drank rat blood and discovered new lands.

00:08:07
They weren't the type to giggle over flowers and hold hands.

00:08:11
As Darla spun around in the shirt, a wide smile on her face, Meila

00:08:16
couldn't pull her eyes from Darla's cute little flourish as she finished.

00:08:21
Darla spread her arms and asked...

00:08:23
"What do you think?" "You look like a wizard.

00:08:27
Know any magic?" "You'll just have to wait and find out."

00:08:31
Darla's eyes glittered as she smiled and looked at Meila.

00:08:38
Three days later, Meila was getting impatient with Darla.

00:08:43
Despite constant requests, Darla refused to go out and investigate the

00:08:48
woods or path. Her excuse was that there was no rush, and while

00:08:53
slowing down to enjoy their rustic life would have appealed to Meila days

00:08:57
before, it now made her feel impatient for action.

00:09:01
Each hour ticking away was another hour that she was failing in her mission to

00:09:06
report back to the Guildmaster thief.

00:09:09
She was, after all, still the Blade of the

00:09:14
Guildmaster. As to Darla, Meila felt her

00:09:19
attitude shifting in the opposite direction.

00:09:22
Meila understood the appeal. She herself still wanted to enjoy this

00:09:27
side of the mountains with Darla, but she wanted to do it while heading home.

00:09:32
Not receiving any response to her entreaties, Meila finally just

00:09:37
left without telling Darla, walking out of the cabin with nothing more than a

00:09:41
knife.

00:09:42
Meila had searched all over for the bow and arrows that the man who dropped them

00:09:47
off said would be there, but she found none.

00:09:51
All she found was a hunting knife, which was long and better than the kitchen

00:09:56
knives, but still a lousy weapon.

00:10:01
Stepping into the woods, Meila muttered to herself.

00:10:04
"How do they expect us to hunt for food without a

00:10:09
bow and arrows?"

00:10:12
Looking around, Meila decided to head straight into the woods, leaving a gash in each tree with the

00:10:17
knife as a guide back to the cabin.

00:10:19
It was a precaution she knew she had to take.

00:10:22
The trees were enormous and all looked the same.

00:10:25
Sure, the vegetation differed here and there, and there were occasional

00:10:30
clearings, but taken as a whole, the forest was one large blank

00:10:35
canvas of green.

00:10:37
The one thing that concerned her was the comment from the man who dropped them off at the

00:10:42
cabin that they had a guard. She expected two or three guards to be

00:10:47
working along a perimeter around the cabin.

00:10:50
Indeed, that was part of why she wanted to head out, to test the

00:10:54
defenses. With three or even four guards if the perimeter was wide

00:10:59
enough, there would still be gaps for her and Darla to slip through.

00:11:04
They would just have to keep track of the defensive rotations.

00:11:08
She had walked straight for nearly an hour when she saw what looked like a clearing ahead.

00:11:13
"Did I somehow slip past the guard?" Meila thought as she

00:11:17
gripped the knife in her hand. If the clearing was a guard post or

00:11:22
barracks, she would have to be extra careful.

00:11:26
Crouching as she got closer, she used all her skill to slip silently

00:11:31
from tree to tree, even over a forest carpet of twigs and brush.

00:11:36
There was a building ahead, but it didn't seem large.

00:11:40
Perhaps it was a hunting lodge, which would have been the best possible scenario.

00:11:45
She could sneak in or overpower the hunters who lived there and steal their

00:11:50
bows and arrows and weapons.

00:11:53
She slid behind the next tree, and as she peeked around it, she nearly dropped her

00:11:57
knife. By the gods, it was her and Darla's cabin,

00:12:02
there was no doubt of it. There was the trail that led back to where their guards had

00:12:07
departed. The front door was the same, and the railing along the front to tether

00:12:12
horses was the same one that she had leaned against as she talked with Darla

00:12:17
about how awful the cabin was for defense, with it having no shutters

00:12:22
and the front door not having a lock.Maela considered that she had somehow

00:12:27
gone in a circle due to her losing her bearings.

00:12:31
She didn't think that her sense of direction was that bad, but she considered it

00:12:35
possible. Striding forward, she walked right past the cabin to the

00:12:40
rear, where she first entered the woods.

00:12:43
Glancing around, she estimated that she was just left of the well when she entered,

00:12:48
so that was what she did once again.

00:12:52
There was only one problem. She couldn't find the mark she left on the trees with her knife.

00:12:57
She had been extremely careful, leaving a deep diagonal gash in every

00:13:02
tree she passed, but there were no gashes near where she'd entered the woods.

00:13:07
Shaking her head, Maela moved to the left to see if she had misjudged where

00:13:12
she entered the woods, but there were no gashes there either.

00:13:17
She then moved to the right and looked at the trees in that direction.

00:13:22
After moving in widening concentric circles, Maela finally had to

00:13:27
admit that her marks were gone. "Do the trees heal that

00:13:32
fast here?" She considered it highly unlikely, but possible.

00:13:36
After all, this was a new land unlike she had ever visited before.

00:13:41
It wasn't close to dark yet, so Maela once again decided to head into the

00:13:46
woods.

00:13:47
This time, she planned to enter straight from the front door and pay close attention to

00:13:52
her direction. She also used the knife to leave deeper cuts in the

00:13:57
trees, hoping to slow down their healing.

00:14:00
The sky was impossible to see through the dense foliage above her head,

00:14:06
and the dim lighting made relative landmarks like stones and bushes

00:14:10
and unique trees difficult to see. Not that they would be helpful at

00:14:15
moving in a straight line,

00:14:18
but

00:14:18
they would have helped.

00:14:21
Still, Maela had navigated the sewers of Ness countless times,

00:14:26
and this was no different.

00:14:29
Trusting her sense of direction, Maela continued forward.

00:14:33
Less than an hour later, she once again approached a clearing, a clearing that was

00:14:38
familiar, even through the dim light of the forest.

00:14:42
Not even bothering to hide her approach, Maela marched forward and shoved

00:14:46
bushes aside.

00:14:48
As she entered the clearing, she looked upon her and Darla's cabin once again.

00:14:53
As before, she entered the clearing directly opposite the front door.

00:14:57
"This is impossible." Maela looked around, but there were

00:15:02
no marks on the trees that she remembered leaving not long before.

00:15:07
Walking along the edge of the clearing, Maela tried to grasp what had just happened.

00:15:12
Looking left and right, Maela examined the width of the clearing.

00:15:16
She thought things over. "It is possible I walked in a curve and

00:15:21
didn't walk straight, but I did not make so sharp of a curve that I reentered

00:15:26
where I left the clearing."

00:15:31
Still, Maela did not quite believe what she had just experienced

00:15:36
twice. The sun was going to set soon, and she was sure that

00:15:40
Darla would soon come out to see what Maela was up to.

00:15:44
So Maela once again entered the forest across from the front door.

00:15:49
The marks on the tree were useless, so Maela just moved straight ahead as fast as

00:15:54
she could. She knew it was reckless, but she had to eliminate the

00:15:58
possibility of what she feared was actually happening.

00:16:02
Moving about three times as fast as she had before, Maela was

00:16:07
relieved when she hadn't reached their cabin after about 30 minutes.

00:16:11
If she had been going in a circle, she would already have stumbled upon the

00:16:16
cabin.

00:16:17
A new fear crept into her head. "Great, Maela.

00:16:22
You marched in a straight line, but now you're lost in the forest."

00:16:27
At that moment, a new thought entered her head.

00:16:30
"How come I haven't run into the guards yet?"

00:16:34
The answer came a moment later as she once again strode into the clearing with her

00:16:39
and Darla's cabin. For the third time in a row, she entered directly

00:16:44
across from the front door.

00:16:46
Sheathing her knife, Maela ran her fingers over her hair.

00:16:52
The feel of the tight curls of black under her palm often calmed her,

00:16:57
and she closed her eyes as she took a deep breath and let the texture claim her

00:17:02
attention.

00:17:03
Maela walked to the cabin. She knew what she had to tell Darla.

00:17:08
There was no escape through the woods.

00:17:10
The wizards had enchanted their cabin, and all paths led to their front door.

00:17:16
What concerned Maela more than their inability to escape their prison

00:17:21
was what the news would do to Darla. At her heart, she knew that Darla

00:17:26
was the same woman who told the guard who dropped them off that they were the kind who

00:17:31
persevered, but she also said they were the type to

00:17:35
escape. How would she react knowing that was no longer true?

00:17:41
But what worried Maela more was if Darla didn't care.
